A Friendship I Never Expected to Lose

I never really thought I would lose this friendship.
There was no huge fight. No dramatic ending. No one said, “We’re not friends anymore.” It just slowly became different.
At one point, talking to this person was such a normal part of my day. I could tell them random things without thinking twice. Something funny happened? I’d tell them. Something annoyed me? I’d tell them. Sometimes we would talk for hours about absolutely nothing.
And then, slowly, the conversations became shorter.
Replies took longer. Plans stopped happening. We started knowing less about each other’s lives.
I kept thinking it was temporary.
Maybe they were busy. Maybe I was busy. Maybe we would eventually go back to how things were.
But we didn’t.
And I think that’s the strange part about losing a friendship. Sometimes there isn’t a specific moment you can point to and say, “That’s when we ended.”
You just wake up one day and realize you haven’t spoken properly in months.
I still remember things that would have immediately made me message them before.
Sometimes I even type something and then stop because I don’t know if it would feel weird now.
I don’t necessarily want the friendship back exactly as it was.
I just sometimes miss how easy it used to feel.
Maybe that’s what I actually miss—the comfort, the familiarity, and having someone who felt like such a natural part of my life.
It’s strange how someone can go from being part of your everyday life to becoming someone you only remember occasionally.
And honestly, I never expected that person to become a memory.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I actually did text them.
Would they reply immediately? Would the conversation feel normal again? Would we talk like nothing ever happened, or would it feel strange because too much time has passed?
I think about these things sometimes, but I also know that curiosity isn't always a reason to go back.
There are people we miss simply because they were once such a big part of our everyday life. You get used to telling them random things, sending them something funny, talking about your day, or just
knowing that they are there. And when that suddenly stops, you don't just miss the person. You miss the routine that came with them.
That's probably what I miss the most.
I miss having someone I could talk to without thinking too much about what to say. I miss the comfort, the familiarity, and even some of the stupid little conversations that didn't really mean anything at the time.
But missing those things doesn't mean I should bring them back.
Sometimes I open our old conversation, read a few messages, and then close it again. Not because I'm trying to hold onto the past, but because some memories are difficult to completely erase. And honestly,
I don't think they need to be erased either.
I'm learning that you can miss someone and still choose yourself.
You can care about someone and still
understand that they don't belong in your life anymore. You can remember the good parts without forgetting why things ended. And you can wish someone well without needing to know what they're doing now.
Maybe one day I won't think about texting them at all.
Maybe their name will just become
another name from a different chapter of my life.
Until then, I don't think there's anything wrong with missing them quietly.
I don't need to send a message just because I have the urge to. I don't need an answer to every feeling. And I definitely don't need to reopen a door just because I sometimes miss what was behind it.
Some people stay in our memories, not our lives.
And maybe that's okay.
Because sometimes the person you miss is not someone you need back. Sometimes, they're just someone you once loved having in your life.
