All that glitter

All that glitter

I clearly remember the day when I found the joy. I was 5 years old and the joy did not come in form of chocolates or candies. It did not also come in form of gifts. The joy that I saw was in form of papers - colourful, glossy papers that smelled like perfumes. My yoy came to me in the form of fashion magazines.

I was a young 5 year old girl who had returned home from school. As I entered my home I saw a stack of books (at that age I did not know they were called magazines). I asked my mother what these books were. My mother told me they were from my dad work and I should stay away from them. I did as my mother instructed but my eyes kept drifting back to them. Because they did not look like regular books. They were shiny and colourful. They had a mild fragrance which I was able to smell even when I was passing from them. From distance I was able to see a beautiful woman dressed up in gorgeous attire on those books. I was curious to see them. I was hoping that dad would allow me to see those books.

In the evening dad returned home. Dad had gone through all those books one by one. He was looking at those books and noting down on a piece of paper. After dad had done looking through those books I decided to approach my dad and ask him about them.

"These are called magazines. These come from my office. I was going through them and making notes so that we can improve them the next time," dad explained. That is when I asked my dad if I can have a look at those magazines. Dad got delighted because he had seen my interest in books and thought that I would become an avid reader when I would grow up. He allowed me to look through them and keep them in good condition.

I took the first magazine in my hand. I loved how it felt against my palms. It was smooth to touch just like velvet. I was looking at the cover page of the magazine. I saw a tall beautiful woman. I admired the dress she was wearing. Her hairstyle, jewellery, makeup, everything kept me captivated. To me shevlooked like a goddess. I was looking so intensely at that image as if I was absorbing all the colours and beauty of it. Then slowly I started turning pages. I felt that each page was more beautiful than the previous one. I saw that each page was showing a stunning dress, finest jewellery, perfume, or another beautiful women wearing all of them together. Each page was catching my attention. I was loving this sensory experience that I was getting by just looking at that Fashion magazine. I was so engrossed in going through that magazine that I could not even realise that it was the time for dinner. After the dinner I got back to those fasion magazines. Finally my parents had to tell me that the magazines were going to remain at our home so that I could go through them even the next day. That night I slept with visuals of glamour in front of my eyes. The fashion world had successfully won the mind of a young girl.

Years later nothing has changed. Yesterday we received a fashion magazine. Last night I said for almost 2 hours reading through the magazine and looking at beautiful clothes and accessories.

Last night I realised that in my heart I am still that 5 year old girl who loves fashion to its core.

This was such a beautiful story from childhood. I must say you were fortunate to get a fashion magazine in your hands. A story where a girl finds fashion is always a pleasant one. I loved how you described your experience as a young girl that resonated with me when I saw the fashion magazine for the first time. Afterall we are just girls who love fashion
