Chocolates

Chocolates

I was born in 1980s. I grrw up in 1990s ( yes I am an elder millennial). My childhood had been different from the people who had their childhood in 2000s or later.

When I was a child chocolate was also considered as a luxury. Not many types of chocolates were available. Mostly we would get chocolates on birthdays. When we would go for a birthday parties, most of the times we would receive melody, mango bite, mango mood, or Rawalgaon candy. If the child was from a wealthy family then they would distribute eclair chocolates. That was the situation of chocolates in my childhood in a nutshell. Dairy milk was a far reach.

I believe that time I was in grade 7. A wealthy girl had joined my class. When it was her birthday she had brought Cadbury Dairy Milk to the school. She had distributed one piece (one piece of 8 pieces, not the whole bar) of the dairy milk to the entire class. I remember all of us were delighted to receive the dairy milk and decided to make that girl as the best friend. Unfortunately, shortly after her birthday, the girl moved to a different city and hence we had lost our opportunity to befriend with her and receive chocolates.

Around the same time Cadbury Perk and Nestle KitKat had been introduced to the market. While my sister liked Perk, I used to like KitKat. Rarely our parents used to get the chocolate from the market and it would be divided among both of us. I would always complain to my mother that she never used to bring the chocolate that I used to love. My mother would bring Perk but never KitKat because my sister never used to like KitKat. Instead of telling me the real reason my mother would say that KitKat is more expensive as compared with Perk (it was not). After hearing that excuse I had decided that when I would start earning I would eat KitKat every single day. What I did not know was the reality was going to be different in the future.

As I grew up I understood that chocolate were not healthy. I realised that chocolates were making me gain weight. As a teenager I want wanted to be slim and trim so that I could wear all the possible clothes. Hence I had stopped eating chocolates or for that matter sugary confectionaries. Somehow I was drifting away from the love of chocolates. I started disliking the taste of chocolates.

Then came the time when I had started working. I had started working at a corporate office and was earning well. During the journey of growing up and learning somewhere I had forgotten my dream of buying chocolates everyday after starting the job.

One day while working I suddenly rememberd the promise my younger self had made to my current self. Even that memory brought tears to my eyes. I thought to myself that when it was the fascination to eat the chocolates I never got the chocolate I wanted. Now that I am old enough who has money in her hands I now no longer desire to eat what I used to like at one point of time. For a moment I felt that I was not happy back them and I am not happy even right now. It was just one chocolate that was telling me the state of my mind from the childhood and even from the adulthood.

When I can finally afford my childhood dream,I would occasionally buy it because I know that its value would be lost if I buy it whenever I want...and Kitkat is still my favourite chocolate

Glad to know. That indeed is a good thought.
