dessert

There is a reason why we reach for dessert after a difficult day, it's not for hunger, but for solace. Desserts i believe are more than sugar and flour, they're emotional anchors, small rituals that whisper to us that we deserve something gentle, something kind.

Think of the last time you had a slice of cake. Was it purely about taste? Or was it wrapped in memory? Maybe it was your grandmother's recipe, and suddenly you weren't just eating , you were time-traveling, held briefly in her arms again through the familiar sweetness. Desserts are time machines. They collapse the distance between who we were and who we are now. I know this because i havr felt it myself.

When we're happy, desserts celebrate with us. Birthday cake isn't really about cake; it's about a room full of people saying, "Your existence matters." When we're sad, a spoonful of ice cream becomes an act of self-compassion in a moment when we've forgotten how to give it to ourselves. Grief makes us want warmth, sweetness, something that feels like a hug from the inside. And dessert is exactly that .

The beauty of dessert is its honesty. It makes no pretense of being necessary, unlike vegetables or proteins, desserts

exist purely for the soul. In a world obsessed with efficiency and productivity, they're a rebellion. They say: your feelings matter enough to pause for something unnecessary. And isn't that what feelings need? Recognition that they're valid enough to stop for, to indulge in?

There's also a strange democracy to dessert. Rich or poor, we all understand chocolate cake. It doesn't judge us for crying into it, for eating it straight from

the pan at midnight, for finding in its sweetness a temporary reprieve from the bitterness of a difficult moment. Desserts meet us where we are without questions.

Perhaps this is why so many cultures have desserts woven into celebrations and mourning alike. In joy and sorrow, we turn to something sweet. It's a universal language, when words fail, we offer kheer, baklava, mochi, churros. We're saying, "I see your feelings, and I'm here with you."

So the next time you eat dessert, notice what you're really tasting. Is it nostalgia? Comfort? Celebration? Defiance? Self-love? Because desserts aren't just about satisfying cravings, they're about satisfying the hunger of the heart.

Sometimes, the sweetest thing about dessert is simply acknowledging that we're allowed to have something good, just because.

When life feels overwhelming and you need comfort, do you
