Do you ever miss a version of yourself that doesn’t exist anymore?
Sometimes I look back and realise I’m not really missing a person or a place. I’m missing who I was when everything felt simpler. The way I used to get excited over
small things, trust people easily, and not overthink every little detail.Growing up changes you quietly. One day you realise you don’t react to things the same way anymore. Some things that once mattered feel distant, and some memories suddenly feel heavier than they used to.Maybe growing up is partly learning to let
go of old versions of yourself without feeling guilty for becoming someone new.
Maybe the hardest part is accepting that some versions of us are meant to stay in the past. We keep thinking about what we would do differently if we could go back, what we would say, who we would avoid, and which moments we would hold onto a little longer. But the truth is, that version of us didn’t know what we know now.
They made decisions with the information they had. They trusted people because they hadn’t learned to be cautious yet. They got excited easily because they hadn’t experienced enough disappointment to be afraid of it. They made mistakes because that’s what growing up looks like sometimes.
I think we are often too harsh on our younger selves. We look back with everything we know today and wonder how we could have been so different. But maybe we were never supposed to know everything back then. And maybe missing that old version of yourself doesn’t necessarily mean you want your old life back. Sometimes you simply miss how it felt to experience the world before you knew how complicated it could become.Still, I don’t want to spend my life wishing I could go backwards. There are things about who I am now that my younger self could never have understood. I’ve learned things I couldn’t
have learned any other way. I’ve become more aware of what I want, what I don’t want, who I trust, and what actually matters to me.
So maybe growing up isn’t about choosing between who you were and who you are now.Maybe it’s about carrying the best parts of every version of yourself forward. The curiosity you had as a child.
The dreams you had as a teenager.
The lessons you learned through your mistakes.
And the person you’re slowly becoming.Maybe that’s enough.Maybe we don’t have to miss who we used to be so much.
Maybe we can simply thank them for getting us here.
When you look back at your younger self, do you
