Grey hair

Grey hair

It began just as a regular day. I got out of the shower and started combing my hair. While combing my hair I felt something unusual. I moved closer to the mirror and started a particular section of my hair where I felt strange. This time I was combing slowly. While combing my hair I caught a glimpse of what had been making its appearance significant. It had been shining and reflecting light from it. It was a grey hair.

Seeing a grey hair made me stop for a second. It was my first grey hair. I am 37 years old and this was my first grey hair. My first thought was should I be worried? I thought about it for a minute. I had seen my friends and colleagues getting grey hair in their 20s. By the time they had turned 30 there entire crown had been covered with silver tendrils. At least I got it later then them.

My second thought was what should I do next? My college professor had told me that the dyes are harmful and may cause cancer. Hair dye was completely out of question for me. I thought whether I should use Henna to colour my hair. It is natural and does not cause any damage to the hair. I decided to order Henna while ordering groceries next time.

While making a mental note for the grocery list another thought crossed my mind. Am I getting old? 37 years is not exactly considered to be young. But also it is not an age that would be considered to be old. As per the scientific age group up to 55 years is still considered young and adult. So as per the science I still qualify to be called as a young woman. But my hair had been telling me a different story.

What I should do to take this under control? Should I start taking vitamin and mineral supplements? Should I change my dietary habits? Stress reduction is completely out of question but what else can I do to restrict the greying of my hair? A lot of questions had started bothering me. It was unbelievable for me that how one grey hair in the morning had consumed so much of my time thinking about my present and future.

Then I took a deep breath. I accepted the reality that this grey hair could be the beginning of aging. I do not need to stress about it. Soon I would see fine lines and wrinkles on my face. There will be more hair that I would start greying. Should I worry about everything? These changes are bound to happen as I would get older. I cannot simply worry about each grey hair or wrinkle. Maybe worrying about that would worsen the problem.

Then I thought what if I embrace it? What if I accept and move on? What if I see the positives? I stopped for a moment and then give it another thought. Maybe seeing a grey hair is not as bad as it looks. Aging is a privilege. Many of my friends could not even see there a 30's and here I am worrying about a single grey hair. It is not a cause of worry but a reason to celebrate. I should celebrate that I had been alive to see a grey hair. I should celebrate that I had been alive to see the signs of aging.

Finally I concluded grey hair is nothing to worry about. It could be my journey towards becoming wiser and vibrant.

Seeing a single grey hair, should you

I think finding your first grey hair can feel like such a small thing, but somehow it makes you pause and think about how quickly time is passing. I really liked how you described that little moment of noticing it in the mirror. Honestly, one grey hair doesn’t have to be something to worry about—it can simply be a reminder that we’re growing and changing with time.
