Lives we never lived

Anonymous1 hour agoWrite Freely299 words

Sometimes I wonder about the versions of my life that never happened. The school I could have gone to.

The friend I might have met if I had sat somewhere else that afternoon. The opportunity I didn’t take because I was too scared.

The city I almost moved to.The person I might have become if one tiny decision had gone differently.

It’s strange because we only get to experience one version of our lives, yet there are thousands of possible versions living quietly in our imagination.

Sometimes I think about them when I’m alone. Not because I regret my life.Just because I’m curious.Would that version of me be happier?

Would she be braver?Would she still have the same laugh?Would she recognize me?Maybe every decision closes a door. But perhaps that’s not something to be afraid of.

Because choosing one life doesn’t mean the others were wasted. They simply became possibilities instead of memories. And maybe that’s why we sometimes feel nostalgic for things we’ve never experienced.

We aren’t necessarily missing a person or a place. We’re missing a possibility.A life that existed only in our imagination.I think there’s something beautiful about that.

It means our minds can hold entire worlds that never had the chance to exist. But eventually, we have to stop visiting those imaginary lives and return to the one that’s actually waiting for us.

Because this life is unfinished.There are still people I haven’t met.Places I haven’t seen.Mistakes I haven’t made.Things I haven’t learned.

Maybe the life I’m wondering about isn’t necessarily better than this one.Maybe it’s just unknown.

And sometimes, the unknown looks beautiful simply because we haven’t lived through its difficult parts. So I’ll keep wondering occasionally.

But I don’t want to spend my whole life mourning the versions of me that never existed.I’d rather meet the version of me that’s still becoming.
