Maintenance

I'm sure that every month, we all say to ourselves, "I'm gonna spend less money this month!"
And then somehow mysteriously all that money disappears even when you've been controlling how much you spend.
Ever since i started college, I realise how much we spend only on necessities. Just buying toilet paper and soap every month uses up so much money. And ordering food is a game of "is it really worth it to spend this much when you can get (bad) mess food for free?"
I never realised how protected I was when my parents spent money for me. Before I turned 18 they used to transfer money to fampay, so I never felt like it was my money. But now that I use my own account I rethink every transaction.
I dont even want to think about how much i've spent in the last 3 or so years. My bank account and I will start crying.
I recently got a car and maintaining that itself requires so much. My parents refuse to help me with it, which is totally valid as they bought it for me. Petrol itself is so expensive I dread when I have to refill it. Just two months of owning the car and I got my tire punctured. I had to fill air on my own, go to the repair shop, watch the guy remove a fat nail from it, and then pay for it. It made me realise what real responsibility is.
And then the rains started and my poor white car became brown. So I had to take it for wash and then pay for it. But luckily I got a coupon- after 4 washes I get a free wash. I'm 1 wash short from a free wash now.
Maintaining my car made me realise A. The state of our economy and B. Real independency. And also what it feels like to be a driver, since I take my friends out so often.
If only money was free, so mucj of the problems in this world could be solved. If only people in power had a heart, they could end inflation and poverty. The only thing we, the common people can do for now is survive and take care of our wallets.
This is such a relatable reminder that financial independence comes with a lot of unexpected expenses. We often think of independence as freedom, but nobody prepares us for the responsibility of paying for all the little things we once took for granted. Also, being just one wash away from a free car wash is honestly the kind of financial milestone we should celebrate! 😂 Here’s to surviving adulthood, protecting our bank balances and hoping that petrol prices show us some mercy! ❤️
