Maybe we already have enough
Sometimes I wonder how easily we forget to appreciate what we have while thinking about everything we don’t.
We look at someone else’s life and notice what exists in theirs that doesn’t exist in ours.Someone has a bigger friend circle.
Someone has a relationship we wish we had.
Someone travels more.
Someone has a family that seems closer.
Someone has opportunities we keep waiting for.
And slowly, without realizing it, we start believing that our life is incomplete.
We spend so much time asking, “Why don’t I have this?” that we forget to ask, “What do I already have?”
Maybe that’s the question we don’t ask often enough. There might be people who would give anything to have the kind of ordinary day you’re complaining about.
The friend you casually talk to every evening. The parent who reminds you to eat.The sibling who annoys you and still checks where you are.
The person who sends you a random meme because it reminded them of you.The familiar room you sometimes desperately want to escape from.
The little conversations you don’t think you’ll miss until one day they become memories. We often don’t realize we’re living through moments that our future selves might desperately want back.
And I’m not saying we should stop wanting more. It’s okay to have dreams. It’s okay to want better friendships, better opportunities, a different career, a new city, or a life that feels more like yours.Wanting more doesn’t make you ungrateful. But perhaps there’s a difference between wanting something and allowing the absence of that thing to make everything else feel meaningless.Maybe we can want the future without disrespecting the present.
Maybe we can say, “I hope I get there someday,” without saying, “My life isn’t good enough until I do.”Because life isn’t only made of the things we are waiting for.
It’s also made of the things sitting quietly beside us.The cup of tea someone made for you.A familiar voice calling your name.A silly conversation that made you laugh.
A safe place to return to.A person who stayed.A morning you got to wake up and experience. We don’t always need a grand reason to be grateful.
Sometimes, gratitude is simply noticing.Noticing the people.Noticing the little moments.Noticing that despite everything we wish were different, there are still things worth holding close.
So maybe tonight, before thinking about everything that’s missing, pause for a moment.Look around.Think about the people, places and little memories that make your life yours.
Maybe you’ll realize that your life isn’t perfect. But it doesn’t have to be.Because sometimes, while waiting for something new to arrive, we forget to cherish what has been here all along.
When you feel like you don't have enough, do you
