my life lesson
A few years ago, I learned an important lesson from a very ordinary situation.
One evening, I was returning home after a long and tiring day. On the way, I noticed an elderly man sitting alone on a bench outside a small shop. He looked worried and kept checking his phone. I was already late, so I initially walked past him.
After a few steps, something made me stop.
I went back and asked if everything was alright. He told me that he was waiting for his son, who was supposed to pick him up, but his phone had stopped working.
I helped him make a call from my phone. His son answered and said he would arrive shortly. I could have simply made the call and left, but I decided to wait with him.During those fifteen minutes, we started talking. He told me about his younger days, his family, and how quickly life seemed to be passing. Before leaving, he said something I still remember: “Sometimes, a person does not need a solution. They just need someone to stay.”That sentence made me think. We often believe that helping others requires money, influence, or some extraordinary ability. But many times, the most valuable thing we can offer is our time and attention. We live in a world where everyone seems busy. We check our phones while someone is speaking to us. We postpone calls because we are occupied. We assume that people around us are fine because they do not complain. But a little kindness can make someone's difficult day easier.I never met that man again, and perhaps he does not even remember me. But I remember him. That evening taught me that we do not always need to do something big to make a difference. Sometimes, simply noticing someone, listening patiently, or staying for a few extra minutes can mean more than we realise.
