Similarities

Similarities

Last night we were looking for a blanket in our bed storage. We found the blanket and while searching for it I saw the bag that had all the family photos. I decided that instead of watching unnecessary content on the social media I would have a look at the photographs.

I sat on my bed with all the photo albums from the bag. I was going through each and every photo album and revisiting the memories. Some of the photo albums very in grey scale indicating that they were from old days. Yet when I saw those black and white photos I felt that they held a special glory and rich history.

While looking at those black and white photos I came across a portrait photo of a man. He was wearing the traditional cap that was worn in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was wearing a prominent Tilak on his forehead. He was wearing glasses. The photo was blurry and black and white yet I felt that this man's character was shining through it. I felt a very different pull towards this photo.

I knew that this man was not my grandfather. I had never seen this photo earlier but looking at the similarities I felt that probably he was my great grandfather. I wanted to confirm this from my dad. Dad confirmed that the man in the photo was indeed my great grandfather.

While looking at my great grandfather's photo I felt something. I saw the striking similarities. I felt for a moment that I look a lot similar to him. I felt that my facial structure and the bone structure was exactly like him. Though I did not have anything right at that moment to compare.

I told my mother that I saw similarities between my face and great grandfather's face. She mentioned that the photo of my great grandfather was a blurry and hence it could not be seen clearly. But I was determined that I wanted to prove that me and my dad we look exactly like my great grandfather. Then I got an idea.

I placed my great grandfather's photo in the centre. I found one of my recent selfies where my face was clearly visible showing the main facial characters. From my dad's phone I found a photo of him where his prominent facial characters would be visible. While great grandfather's photo was in the centre, on the right was my photo and on the left was dad's photo. Then I called my parents for evaluation.

When the three photos were kept side by side the similarities were really evident. The eyes were exactly the same. Our noses were identical - straight, sharp, and wide. Our job structure was also identical - sharp, angular, and gaunt. There were a quite a lot of similarities in our faces. Me and my dad were completely in awe looking at the similarities from generations. I regretted that we did not have a photo of my great great grandfather so that we could have been able to verify the similarities.

Looking at these pictures made me emotional. At the same time I was extremely proud that the facial features had not skipped any generation. I was really glad to see that my face had that 'signature look' of my family.

What a beautiful reminder that sometimes our family history lives not just in photographs, but in the faces we carry forward. ❤️ The “signature look” passing through generations must have been such an emotional thing to witness!
