Swollen eye

It was 6:30 in the morning and my alarm went off. I immediately woke up. While I sat on my bed processing the fact that the day has become I felt little numbness on my face. I realised that I was sleeping on my left side and that could be the reason why the left side of my face is feeling numb. I decided to ignore it and carry on with my day.

While getting ready I could still feel little swelling around my left eye. Thankfully the numbness had disappeared. I thought that this swelling would also go down after sometime. Since there was no pain or discomfort I felt that this issue did not require any attention or intervention from my side.

Then I went to the office and started working. While I was working I was approached by a colleague. She wanted my opinion on the project that she had been completing. After our discussion I noticed that she was staring at me. She asked me, "is your eyes swollen? What happened?"

I knew that she did not want to make fun of me but she was concerned. I gently massaged around my eye and asked her, " I don't know what happened. I woke up to this swollen eye. Is it so prominent?" She nodded.

I decided to apply cold water to reduce the swelling. I went to the office pantry to get cold water. But apparently it was not a day in my favour. The cooler was not functioning that day and I could not get cold water. I felt disappointed and returned to my desk.

I continued to work but after sometime I felt that the swelling had been spreading. I quickly checked in the pocket mirror to see the damage. I was surprised to see that the swelling had spread from my eye little down to my cheek. I could not understand what had cause this swelling and why was it spreading. For a minute, I thought whether this could have been a reaction. I did not want to take any chance and decided to leave the office and seek medical attention. I had been feeling antsy.

I left my office and was on my way to home. On the way I constantly was feeling that the swelling was rapidly spreading. I was just hoping that whatever it was should not worsen till the time I reach a medical facility. But things were worsening.

Finally I reached a medical facility near my home. I filled out the forms describeing my chief complaint and waited for a doctor to see me. During the wait time I was feeling that now my entire left side of the face had been swollen.

When the doctor saw me I could see the horror on his face, because of my swollen face. Being a healthcare professional myself I described my whole experience from the morning in details. The doctor examined my swollen face and told me that I was getting a reaction to the insect sting. The insect had stung me near my eye and that was why this swelling had started from there. The doctor give me medications and ask me to rest.

I went home thinking that how tiny insects affect our lives so easily. I thought to myself that humans are not as mighty at they think they are, because we are helpless even in front of the tiny insects.
