The day I said no

My manager asked me to take on another task today. Even though I was already behind on two others. Usually, I would have agreed immediately and complained about it later. This time, I explained that I couldn't finish everything properly by the deadline. I spent the next hour feeling guilty, convinced I had made myself look lazy. But my manager simply reassigned part of the work. Nothing terrible happened. Nobody questioned my commitment or stopped speaking to me. I went home surprised by how much energy I had wasted worrying about a consequence that never arrived. Perhaps boundaries feel frightening mainly because we practise them so rarely.
