The day I tried become an adult

There are certain moments in life when you suddenly feel like you have finally become an adult.

For me, that moment lasted approximately seventeen minutes.

It started on a completely normal morning. I woke up, looked at the time, and immediately realized I had slept through three alarms. Instead of panicking, I calmly stared at the ceiling and thought, “This is fine. I am a responsible person.”

I don’t know why I lied to myself that early in the morning.I got out of bed, folded my blanket, drank water, and even opened my notebook to make a to-do list. I wrote:

  1. Study.
  2. Be productive.
  3. Organize life.
  4. Stop wasting time.
  5. Become successful.

Looking at the list, I felt incredibly proud. Then I spent twenty minutes choosing the perfect pen to write the date.

After that, I decided to make my room look more organized because, apparently, successful people have clean rooms. I picked up my clothes, folded exactly two of them, and then discovered an old chocolate wrapper under my bed.Naturally, I had to investigate. This somehow turned into cleaning the entire drawer.

While cleaning the drawer, I found an old receipt from a restaurant I had completely forgotten about. That reminded me of the food I had eaten there. That made me hungry.

So I went to the kitchen. There was no food.At this point, adulthood was already getting suspicious.I decided to make tea. Surely, responsible adults make their own tea.

I put water in the pan, added tea leaves, milk, sugar, and then stood there feeling extremely accomplished.Five minutes later, I realized I had forgotten to turn on the stove.

I stared at the cold pan.The pan stared back.We both knew I wasn’t ready.Eventually, I made the tea and sat down with my notebook again. This time, I was determined.

I studied for exactly eleven minutes. Then my phone vibrated. It was just a notification.I unlocked it.

Twenty-seven minutes later, I was watching a random video about someone organizing their refrigerator.I don’t even own half the things that person had in their refrigerator.

Still, I watched the entire thing.By afternoon, my ambitious to-do list remained almost completely untouched. But I had cleaned one drawer, made tea, watched refrigerator content, reorganized my pens, and learned absolutely nothing academically useful. Then my mother asked, “Aaj kya kiya?”I looked at her confidently.

“Kaafi productive thi.”She looked at my books. Then at me.Then back at my books.I knew I had been caught.

That day taught me something important about adulthood.Being an adult isn’t suddenly knowing how to manage everything. Sometimes it’s just

confidently pretending you have a plan while secretly searching, “How long can cooked rice stay in the fridge?”And honestly?I’m still figuring it out.

When adulthood feels like a performance, do you
