The fear of becoming ordinary
I think one of my quietest fears is becoming ordinary. Not because I believe ordinary people are insignificant. They aren’t. Some of the kindest,
strongest, most beautiful lives are incredibly ordinary.Maybe I’m just afraid of reaching a point where I stop wondering what else is possible.
Growing up, I thought adulthood would feel like arriving somewhere. Like one day I’d suddenly know who I was, what I wanted, where I was going, and why.
But the older I get, the more I realize that nobody really arrives. We just keep becoming. And sometimes I look around and wonder if I’m doing enough with the life I’ve been given.
Will I travel to the places I’ve dreamed about? Will I create something that exists because I existed? Will I make my younger self proud?
Or will I wake up one morning and realize I’ve spent years simply going through the motions?Maybe that’s what scares me.Not having a small life.
Having a life that I never really chose.A life built entirely around expectations, convenience, and what everyone else thought was sensible.
I don’t need to be famous.I don’t need millions of people to know my name.I just want to feel like I lived deliberately.I want stories that aren’t just things I watched happen to other people.
I want mistakes I can laugh about later.Places I’ve never seen.People who changed me.Dreams that scared me enough to try.Maybe being ordinary isn’t the problem after all.
Maybe the real fear is becoming so afraid of failure that you never give yourself the chance to become anything at all.
And perhaps that’s the reminder I need:I don’t have to live an extraordinary life according to everyone else.I just have to make sure it’s mine.
