The Last Seat by the Window

Anonymous1 hour agoWrite Freely380 words

Every morning, an old man sat on the same bench at the bus stop.

Same time.

Same seat.

Same silence.

People around him knew him, but nobody really knew why he came there every day.

One rainy morning, a young girl sat beside him.

After a few minutes, she asked, “Are you waiting for someone?”

The old man smiled.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

He looked at the empty road and quietly said,

“My daughter.”

The girl smiled. “Is she coming today?”

The old man didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “She used to come here every morning when she was little. I would walk her to school from this bus stop.”

The girl noticed the sadness in his eyes.

“What happened?”

He looked down at his hands.

“She grew up.”

The girl didn't understand.

He continued,

“She got a job in another city. Then she got married. Life became busy. We slowly stopped talking.”

He took an old phone from his pocket.

“Three years ago, she called me. I was angry with her about something stupid. I told her I didn't have time to talk.”

His voice became quieter.

“That was the last time she called.”

The girl didn't know what to say.

The old man looked at the road again.

“I've been coming here every morning since then.”

“Why?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because if she ever decides to come back… I don't want her to find an empty seat.”

The girl looked away, trying not to cry.

The bus arrived.

The old man stood up slowly.

Before getting on, he looked at the empty seat beside him and gently whispered,

“I'll be here tomorrow too.”

Years later, the girl still remembered that old man.

And whenever she wanted to ignore a call from someone she loved, she remembered his words.

She answered.

Because she had learned something most people understand only when it's too late:

We often think we have unlimited time with the people we love.

But sometimes, the last conversation is happening without us knowing it.

So say “I love you.”

Say “I'm sorry.”

Make the call.

Reply to the message.

Don't wait until someone becomes a memory to realize how much they meant to you.

Because some empty seats are waiting for people who will never return. ❤️
