The Message She Never Sent

Anonymous1 hour agoWrite Freely382 words

At 1:17 a.m., a girl opened her mother's chat.

She typed:

“Amma, I miss you.”

She stared at it.

Then deleted it.

She typed again:

“Are you awake?”

Deleted.

Then:

“I want to tell you something.”

Deleted that too.

She locked her phone and went to sleep.

The next morning, her mother called.

“Did you eat?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to college?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Take care.”

That was their usual conversation.

Nothing special.

And maybe that's why she didn't realize how special it was.

Months passed.

The girl became busier.

Assignments.

Exams.

Friends.

Plans.

A thousand little things.

Her mother kept calling.

Sometimes the girl answered.

Sometimes she didn't.

Sometimes she saw the missed call and thought,

“I'll call her later.”

One evening, she finally called back.

Her mother didn't answer.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Then her father called.

“Your mother is sleeping.”

The girl laughed.

“Okay. Tell her I'll call tomorrow.”

Her father was silent for a moment.

Then he said,

“Okay.”

The next morning, the girl woke up to several missed calls.

She called her father.

This time, his voice was different.

Her mother had passed away during the night.

The girl couldn't speak.

She opened their chat.

The last message from her mother was from the previous evening:

“Did you eat?”

She stared at those three words for a long time.

Then she noticed something.

Her own message—the one she had typed months ago and deleted—was still in her mind.

Amma, I miss you.

She wished she had sent it.

Not because her mother needed to hear it.

But because she needed to say it.

Years later, whenever she missed her mother, she would open that chat.

The last message never changed.

“Did you eat?”

And she finally understood:

We spend so much time waiting for the right moment to say what we feel.

But love doesn't need a perfect moment.

It needs a message.

A phone call.

A hug.

Five minutes.

Anything.

Because the hardest message to live with is not the one someone didn't reply to.

It's the one you never sent.

Lesson

If you love someone, tell them while you still have the chance. Don't let pride, busyness, or “I'll do it later” become the reason you carry unsaid words for the rest of your life. ❤️
