The mona lisa
I saw the Mona Lisa today, although technically I saw a picture on my phone while waiting for my tea to boil. She looked exactly as she always does calm, slightly amused and completely aware that millions have spent centuries trying to understand her expression. Somehow that felt funny too.
I opened articles afterwards because I suddenly wanted to know why this woman became so famous, Leonardo da Vinci painted her obviously, but that alone cannot explain everything Countless beautiful paintings hang quality in museuma
Yet people travel across countries to stand before this tiny portrait for a few seconds.
That thought led me down and internet rabbit hole. Where I found people arguing about whether the painting is genuinely extraordinary or simply famous because it is famous. Some visitors describe the Louvre experience like a concert crowd. Others say they barely looked because everyone around them simply look photographs.
Honestly I understand both sides. If I reached the Louvre after saving money, booking flights and walking with tired feet, after walking all day. I would want photographsic proof too. Imagine returning home and saying ," I saw the Mona Lisa"for someone to ask for proof. The souvenir becomes evidence.
Yet the more I thought about it.bthe stranger the painting became . Her smile does not look dramatic. She is not posting like someone in a photograph she aite there looking forward us, while centuries of people keep projecting questions onto her face. Maybe uncertainty is part of the attraction.
I found it amusing that sometimes expect her to be enormous. She is actually relatively small. Which makes the crowd around her ridiculous. Huge painting la nearby contain armies ceremonies, architecture and tinyvlittle details, but everyone gathers arounnd one quiet women behind protective glass. That strange contrast fascinates me.
Still calling the Mona Lisa overatedvfeelsbtoo easy. Famebhasbchanged the experience of seeing her, butbthat does not erase the skill, history and journey behind the painting. Perhaps the real curiosity is not onlyvthe woman smiling at us, but why we continue needing her to mean something.
So tonight after closing the rabbit holeband drinkingbmy tea. I lookesvat her once more on mybacreen. I still cannot decide whether I find the painting beautiful, mysterious or fascinating. Maybe thatvis exactly the point. Some things survive because people keep wondering about them.
