The Money in His Pocket

She always complained about her brother.

“He never buys me anything.”

Whenever her friends showed off gifts from their brothers, she felt a little jealous.

Her brother wasn't the type to say “I love you.”

He teased her.

He fought with her.

He stole food from her plate.

And whenever she asked for money, he would say,

“Ask Amma.”

So she thought he didn't care.

One day, her college announced a trip.

She desperately wanted to go.

The fee was more than she could afford.

She asked her parents, but money was tight that month.

“Maybe next time,” her mother said gently.

She pretended she didn't care.

“It's okay. I don't even want to go.”

But her brother had heard everything.

That night, she saw him sitting outside, counting the money in his wallet.

She laughed.

“Why are you counting your ₹500 like you're rich?”

He quickly put the money away.

“Mind your business.”

She didn't think about it again.

The next morning, she found the trip fee on the table.

She looked at her mother.

“Where did this come from?”

Her mother smiled.

“Your brother gave it.”

She ran to his room.

“Why did you give me your money?”

He shrugged.

“I didn't need it.”

She knew that wasn't true.

A few days later, she accidentally discovered that he had been saving that money for months to buy himself a new pair of shoes.

She went to him.

“You wanted those shoes, didn't you?”

He looked away.

“So?”

“You gave me that money instead?”

He smiled.

“You've been talking about that trip for months.”

She started crying.

He immediately became uncomfortable.

“Hey, why are you crying? It's just money.”

She wiped her tears.

“No. It's not.”

He looked at her.

She whispered,

“You always say you don't care.”

He smiled and replied,

He smiled and replied,

“If I didn't care, I wouldn't know what you've been talking about for the last three months.”

She laughed through her tears.

Years later, she would forget what she saw on that trip.

She would forget the places they visited and the photos they took.

But she would never forget the money her brother quietly gave up for her.

Because that day she understood something:

Some brothers don't know how to express love with words.

They express it by giving you the better piece of food.

By waiting outside when you're late.

By pretending they don't care.

By fighting with you all day—

and secretly making sure you're okay at night.

And sometimes, the person who says “I don't care” is the one who cares the most.

Lesson

Love doesn't always sound like “I love you.” Sometimes, it sounds like “Take mine. I don't need it.” ❤️

When your sibling secretly gives you their own money for something you need,
