The Phone Call
The Phone Call
I Was About to IgnoreOne evening, I was extremely busy. I had several things to finish, and my phone kept ringing. Most of the calls werenotifications or people asking about ordinary things, so when an old friend's name appeared on the screen, I almost ignored it.I thought, “I will call back later.”
But for some reason, I answered. At first, the conversation was normal. We talked about work, old memories, and people we knew. After a few minutes, my friend became quiet.
I asked if everything was okay.He told me that he had been going through a difficult period and had not really spoken to anyone about it. He said he had called me because he remembered that I had always listened without judging him.I did not know what to say.I was not a professional counsellor, and I could not solve his problems. All I could do was listen. So I listened. We spoke for almost an hour. I did not give him any great advice. I simply allowed him to talk.
Before ending the call, he said, “I actually feel a little lighter now.”After we hung up, I sat quietly for a while.I thought about how close I had come to missing that conversation simply because I was busy. That evening changed the way I looked at phone calls and conversations. I realisedthat sometimes people do not call because they need information or a solution. Sometimes they call because they need to feel that someone is there We often underestimate the importance of listening. We are so eager to give advice that we forget to understand what the other person is actually saying.
Of course, listening cannot solve every problem. Some situations require professional support or practical action. But being present for someone can still be valuable.
Since then, when someone I care about calls unexpectedly, I try not to assume that it is unimportant.
Life can become very busy, but not every important moment announces itself beforehand.
Sometimes, the call we are tempted to ignore is the conversation someone genuinely needed.
You may not always have the right words to help someone, but your willingness to listen can sometimes be more meaningful than any advice.
