The Strange Attachment We Have To Certain Clothes
I don't know why we get so attached to certain clothes
It's literally just a shirt
A piece of fabric that has somehow survived questionable washing cycles, random stains, and probably more days than it was supposed to
And yet, the moment someone says, “You should throw this away,”
Absolutely not
There are clothes in my cupboard that I haven't worn properly in months
Maybe even years
But I'm still not ready to let them go
And the funniest part is that I don't even have a good reason
It's not expensive
It's not particularly fashionable
It might not even fit the way it used to
But somehow, it feels wrong to get rid of it
Maybe because some clothes become familiar
You know exactly how they feel
You know which pocket has a tiny tear
You know how the sleeves sit
You know that this particular hoodie is the one you automatically reach for when you're cold
At some point, it stops feeling like just clothing
It becomes your thing
And I think we all have that one piece of clothing
The old T-shirt we refuse to throw away
The hoodie that has become part of our personality
The jeans that have somehow survived every wardrobe clean-out
The outfit we wore so often that our family probably associates it with us 😭
Sometimes it's not even about how the clothes look
It's about how they feel
Maybe you wore that shirt during your favourite trip
Maybe that hoodie was what you wore during an entire winter
Maybe you've had the same piece since school
Maybe someone gave it to you
Or maybe there isn't even a story
Maybe you simply liked wearing it
And apparently, that's enough
There's also something strangely comforting about wearing something old
New clothes can feel exciting, but old clothes feel familiar
You don't have to think about them
You already know they're comfortable
You already know how they look
You can put them on without standing in front of the mirror for twenty minutes wondering if you made the right choice 😭
And then comes the wardrobe-cleaning phase
You pick something up and think, I haven't worn this in forever
Then you try to convince yourself to throw it away
Then you remember that one day you might need it
So it goes back into the cupboard
Completely untouched
Until the next wardrobe clean-up
And somehow the same conversation happens again
Maybe we're not actually attached to the clothes
Maybe we're attached to the familiarity of them
They become tiny pieces of our everyday lives without us noticing
A favourite shirt can carry a season
A hoodie can carry a phase
A dress can remind you of a particular version of yourself
And even when you eventually stop wearing it, getting rid of it can feel strangely final
Kapde purane ho jaate hain, lekin unse judi aadat itni jaldi purani nahi hoti
Maybe that's why some things stay in our cupboards long after they've stopped being useful
Not because we need them
Just because, somewhere along the way, they became ours
And honestly, I think every cupboard has at least one piece of clothing that has survived purely because its owner simply cannot say goodbye 😭
When it's time to clean out your closet, do you
Your vote is final.
