The Tiny Lies We Tell Ourselves Every Day
I think we all lie to ourselves way more than we realise. Not huge lies.Just tiny little promises that somehow become part of our daily routine.
“I’ll sleep early tonight”
Sure
And then it’s 2:17 a.m. and you’re watching a completely unnecessary video about something you didn’t even care about five minutes ago.
“I’ll only scroll for five minutes”
One hour later, you’re still scrolling and somehow you’ve reached a video from an account you don’t even remember following. 😭
One hour later, you’re still scrolling and somehow you’ve reached a video from an account you don’t even remember following. 😭
“I’m not buying anything.”Then you see something cute. You don’t need it.You know you don’t need it.
You still start calculating whether you can somehow justify buying it.“I’ll start tomorrow.”Probably the most popular lie of all.
I’ll study tomorrow.I’ll organise my room tomorrow.I’ll start exercising tomorrow.I’ll reply tomorrow.I’ll fix my sleep schedule tomorrow.
Tomorrow has somehow become responsible for fixing everything we don’t want to deal with today. And then there are the extremely specific lies.
“I won’t get attached.”“I’ll just watch one episode.”“I’ll remember where I kept this.”“I don’t need to write it down.”“I’ll wake up without an alarm.”
“I won’t check my phone.”“I’ll leave the house in ten minutes.”That last one deserves an award because we all know it’s never ten minutes. 😭
The funny thing is, we usually know we’re lying while we’re saying it.We know “five more minutes” probably means thirty.
We know “I’ll just look” might become an entire shopping session. We know “I’ll start tomorrow” has already been said several times.
But somehow we keep making these little promises anyway.Maybe because they’re comforting.Tomorrow feels like a clean page.Next week feels like we’ll suddenly become organised.
Monday feels like the perfect time to become a completely different person. And sometimes we actually do start.Just… not always on the day we promised ourselves.Maybe that’s okay too
Maybe we don’t need to become perfect at keeping every tiny promise. But honestly, if our brains could keep a record of every “five more minutes” we’ve ever said…
I think we’d all be slightly embarrassed.😭So, be honest. What’s the one tiny lie you tell yourself way too often?
Mine is definitely “I’ll sleep early tonight.” And it’s literally 1:30 am right now.
Mine is definitely “I’ll start tomorrow.” Somehow tomorrow has been postponed for weeks. 😭
I'll do it tommorow isbthe most common for me, procrastination is my best friend whom I want to abandon
