The Unopened Door
Every night, a mother left her daughter's bedroom door slightly open.
Even after her daughter grew up.
Even after she moved to another city.
Even after she stopped coming home every weekend.
The room remained exactly the same.
The old books were still on the shelf.
Her childhood drawings were still on the wall.
And on the bed was the little teddy bear she had once begged her mother to buy.
Whenever relatives asked, “Why don't you clean this room and use it for something else?”
Her mother always smiled.
“She's coming home someday.”
But the daughter was busy building her life.
College became a job.
The job became responsibilities.
Responsibilities became years.
She called her mother less and less.
“I'm busy, Amma. I'll call you later.”
And her mother always replied,
“Okay, mole. Take care.”
One evening, the daughter received a call.
Her mother had been admitted to the hospital.
She rushed home.
For the first time in years, she opened the door to her childhood room.
Everything was still there.
But on the pillow, she found a small envelope with her name on it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
“My dear,
I know you have your own life now.
I never wanted to become a burden in it.
That's why I never complained when you were too busy to call.
But every night, when I closed my eyes, I still imagined you walking through this door and saying, ‘Amma, I'm home.’
If you come home one day and I'm not here, please don't feel guilty.
I was never waiting for your success.
I was only waiting for you.”
The daughter sat on the floor.
For the first time, she noticed something she had never noticed before.
Her mother had kept the door open all those years.
Not because she expected her daughter to return.
But because a mother's heart never really learns how to close the door on her child.
The next morning, the daughter sat beside her mother's bed and held her hand.
“I came home, Amma.”
Her mother slowly opened her eyes.
And with the smallest smile, she whispered,
“I know.”
Lesson
Don't wait for a special occasion to call your mother. Don't assume she will always be there. One day, the person waiting for your footsteps may only be waiting in your memories. ❤️
