The Unspoken Competition Nobody Admitted To

Anonymous2 hours agoWrite Freely472 words

Have you ever realised that sometimes people are competing with each other without anyone actually saying that it's a competition? Not in some serious “I need to defeat you” kind of way.

I mean the tiny, completely unnecessary competitions that soLike when two people are walking together and, without discussing it, one person suddenly starts walking slightly faster. Somehow happen in everyday life.

Now the other person has two choices: slow down and accept defeat, or speed up.

And somehow, five minutes later, you're both walking like you're late for a flight. 😭

Or when someone says, “I studied for only two hours.”

And you immediately think, Oh, I studied for three.

Nobody asked.

Nobody is giving out medals.

But suddenly you need everyone to know.

School was probably full of these little competitions too.

Who finished the assignment first?

Who got the higher marks?

Who had the newest phone?

Who knew about the new teacher before everyone else?

Who could answer the question without looking at the book?

And sometimes even siblings turn completely normal things into competitions.

Who gets the front seat?

Who gets the bigger piece?

Who can stay awake longer?

Who gets ready first?

Who gets more compliments?

And the funniest part is that sometimes the other person doesn't even know you're competing.

You could be sitting there thinking, I'm definitely winning this.

Meanwhile, they're just living their life.

Social media probably made this even stranger.

Someone posts their holiday.

You suddenly want to travel.

Someone buys something new.

You start thinking about what you should buy. Someone announces a new achievement.

And suddenly your own perfectly normal life feels like it's running five minutes behind everyone else's.

But not every comparison is serious.

Sometimes it's just human nature.

We notice what other people are doing and automatically measure ourselves against it.

The problem starts when everything becomes a scoreboard.

Who is doing better?

Who is ahead?

Who earns more?

Who looks more successful?

Who has more friends?

Who is travelling more?

Who has their life figured out?

And honestly, nobody really has the full picture.

You can look like you're winning from the outside while secretly wondering what everyone else seems to understand that you don't. Maybe that's why these little competitions are so funny when you actually stop and notice them.

Half the time, we're competing in games nobody agreed to play.

And sometimes the smartest thing you can do is simply leave the scoreboard.

Let someone walk faster.

Let someone finish first.

Let someone have the better phone, the higher marks, the bigger achievement.

Your life doesn't become smaller just because someone else's looks bigger.

Still…

I want to know how many completely unnecessary competitions we've all participated in without admitting it. 😭

What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever secretly competed with someone over?

When you notice someone else's achievements, do you

This is so painfully relatable 😭 Sometimes we don’t even realise we’ve turned a completely normal moment into a competition until we’re halfway through it. “Half the time, we’re competing in games nobody agreed to play” is such a good way to put it. 😂
