The Weird Comfort of Being Unknown

There are days when I genuinely wish I could disappear for a little while. Not in a dramatic way, but just disappear from everyone’s expectations. No calls asking what I am doing no questions about my future no explanations about why I am not where I thought I would be by now.
Just exist somewhere without having to prove that i am doing something meaningful with my life.
I was thinking about this recently when I went out alone for a little while. Nothing special, just a normal evening. I bought something to eat, walked around, watched people rushing to get home, and sat for a bit without checking the time. And honestly it felt surprisingly good.
Nobody knew me there. Nobody knew what I was doing, what I was worried about, what I had failed at recently or what I was trying to figure out. I was just another person sitting in a crowded place , probably looking lost as everyone else.
And there was something comforting about that.
I think sometimes we get so caught up in how people perceive us that we forget what it feels like to simply be ourselves. We become conscious of every decision, every delay, every achievement we haven’t made yet. Even conversations with people we love can start feeling like little performance reviews.
Whats next?
Any plans?
And I know most people ask these questions because they care. But sometimes you don’t have an answer. Sometimes you are still trying to understand your own life, and explaining it to someone else feels like another task you are not prepared for.
I miss the version of myself who could enjoy an ordinary afternoon without feeling guilty about it . The one who could watch a movie without calculating how many hours were wasted, or go to sleep without mentally listing everything left unfinished.
Maybe that’s why travelling somewhere unfamiliar feels so freeing. You can walk through a market , try a random cafe , take pictures of buildings you will probably never see again, and nobody expects you to be anything other than the person standing there.
I don’t necessarily want to run away from my responsibilities. I just want a little space between who I am and what everyone expects me to become.
And maybe that’s not selfish.
Maybe growing up also means learning that you don’t have to explain every pause in your life. You can take your time, change your mind, have an unproductive week, and still be someone worth respecting.
I also think we underestimate how much we need these little breaks from being unknown. Sometimes you don’t want advice , reassurance or even someone telling you everything will be fine. You just want to exist without being questioned. To have a few hours where your life isn’t a conversation topic , and where you don’t have to pretend that you have everything figured out.
For now , I think I just want more evenings where I can sit somewhere, eat something nice, and not feel like I am falling behind.
No big life lessons. No sudden transformations.
When you need to escape expectations, do you
