There are things we borrow from people without…
There are things we borrow from people without ever realizing that we are borrowing them.A phrase.A habit.A song.A way of laughing.
A particular expression we start using because someone we once knew used it all the time.I noticed this recently when I caught myself saying something my grandmother used to say whenever I was being unnecessarily dramatic. I laughed the moment the words came out of my mouth. She isn’t around to hear me say them anymore.
But somehow, a tiny part of her still is.Maybe this is how people remain with us.Not always through photographs or belongings kept carefully inside cupboards, but through the smallest pieces of themselves that accidentally become part of us.My mother has a habit of checking the door twice before going to bed. I used to find it annoying. Now, without consciously deciding to, I do the same thing. My father folds newspapers in a very particular way. I never understood why. Recently, I noticed myself folding one exactly like him.A friend once introduced me to a song. We eventually stopped talking, but years later, that
song still appears in my playlist sometimes. I don’t skip it anymore. There was a time when I thought remembering someone meant missing them.
Now I think it can mean something much quieter. It can mean discovering that they changed you. Some people stay in our lives for decades.
Others remain for a few months, weeks, or even a single conversation. Yet their influence doesn’t always disappear when their presence does.
Someone might have taught you to drink your tea slowly.Someone might have convinced you to read again.
Someone might have told you that you were capable of something when you didn’t believe it yourself.Someone might have hurt you so badly that you learned how to protect your peace.
Someone might have loved you so gently that you learned what kindness looked like.We carry all of it.The beautiful parts. The painful parts. The lessons we never asked for.
The memories we thought we had forgotten.Perhaps growing up is partly about realizing that we are made of borrowed pieces.A little bit of our parents.A little bit of our grandparents.
A little bit of our childhood friends.A little bit of the strangers who were kind to us on difficult days.Even a little bit of the people who broke our hearts.
And maybe that’s why becoming completely independent from our past is impossible. We don’t leave everything behind when we move forward. We take pieces with us.
The difference is that, with time, we learn which pieces deserve to stay.Tonight, I caught myself using my grandmother’s old phrase again. For a moment, I smiled.
It felt strange to realize that somewhere along the way, something that once belonged only to her had quietly become mine.
Maybe that is the closest thing to immortality ordinary people get.We leave little pieces of ourselves in others.
And they carry them forward without even knowing it.
When someone you loved is gone, you can carry a piece of them by
