Two different stories

I recently watched 500 days of summer and I hadn't stopped thinking about Tom and Summer.

The intresting thing about their story is how neither of them necessarily lie about what they want. They simply want different things but somewhere along the way, Tom beleived that they want the same thing.

Tom falls in love with summer. That is what everyone says but I wonder how much of his love is for the actual person and how much is for the future he imagined with her. He remembers little things and attaches meaning to their conversations and noticed every gestures, turns ordinary moments to extraordinary. For him, every interaction becomes another piece of love story that he believes they are living together.

Summer, meanwhile seems to experience those same amounts without attaching promises to them. She enjoys his company, shares beautiful with him but doens't necessarily see their relationship heading towards the future Tom has imagined.

And that is where things bes painfully similar.

Haven't we all, at some point assigned meaning to something that might mean very little to other person? A late night conversation becomes a sign. A random message makes us smile for hours. Someone remembering a tiny details feels like proof that we are special to them. We collect these little moments and build an entire story around them, sometimes without asking wheather the other person is writing the same.

Perhaps that is one of the hardest part of unrequited love. Sometimes you are not greiving a person. You are grieving the future that you imagined with them.

This is such a thoughtful take on the movie. Sometimes we fall in love not just with a person, but with the version of the future we have quietly built around them. The little moments feel like promises, even when they were never meant to be. And perhaps the saddest part is realising that two people can share the same memories yet carry completely different meanings from them. ❤️

You said it so well. He didn't fall for Summer, he fell for the idea of her and the future he built in his head. That's why it hurt so much when reality didn't match his imagination.
