Why are fruits expensive?

It was a day before my fast. I generally eat only fruits on the day of fasting so I went to the market to buy fruits. After I had brought the fruits, the shopkeeper tells me to pay rs 430 for the fruits. I was shocked because I had not bought a lot of fruits. I asked the shopkeeper to show me the calculation. Muskmelon was costing me rs 100, half kilogram apples for rs 180, pineapple for rs 150. Just 3 varieties of fruits were costing me rs 430. I felt a blackout for a few seconds. It made me wonder why are fruits so expensive?
I understand that the inflation is rising each and every day. Everything is getting expensive, but fruits are almost as expensive as gold. When I gave more thought about it, I thought I had opened a can of worms.
As we learnt in the school fruits are the richest source of vitamins and minerals. If fruits are cheaper, each person would easily get these nutrients. Easy access to nutrients would make every person fitter and healthier. If there is no deficiency of vitamins, then who would buy the multivitamin supplements?
Let me take another step ahead. Fruits are amazing source of fiber which can get rid of multiple digestive ailments. If fruits are easily available, every person would have good digestion. Then who would buy medicines and supplements to improve digestion?
Another aspect is towards the immunity. Fruits help improve the immunity. If every person has great immunity, then the diseases and infections may be brought under control. If that happens, then what would happen to most of the medicines in the market?
Fruits lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, cholesterol disregulation, diabetes, and many other life threatening conditions. These conditions run the businesses. If these conditions diminish, what would happen to various industries that exist because of these ailments?
When I thought about these possibilities I felt as if I was being deceived. I felt as if I am deliberately kept away from accessing better health so that I would fall ill frequently and keep a lot of industries running. I am forced to pay a high cost for buying fruits so that I would think twice before buying them. Looking at the cost, I may think of not buying fruits and relying on store brought supplements.
After thinking about these possibilities my head was spinning. I felt as if I was trapped in a system that wants me to fall ill. It wants to keep me away from fruits and sell me cheaper burgers, pizzas, vada pav, and other less nutritious foods so that I would think of filling myself with a fuel that is bound to make me unhealthy and ill. I was enraged thinking how we ordinary humans are used as pawns to keep various industries and businesses running.
It is so strange that buying a few fruits made me spiral into a pyramid scheme of health and wellbeing wih a realisation that the whole system is working against me and wants me to fall sick.

This was such an interesting read! 😂 It’s fascinating how a simple trip to buy fruits turned into an entire investigation of the healthcare and food industries. The fruit bill of ₹430 was clearly the villain of this story! While I agree that nutritious food should be affordable and accessible to everyone, I think we might be giving the fruit seller a little too much credit for triggering an economic conspiracy theory. 😂 Sometimes inflation is the culprit, not a secret meeting between fruit sellers and pharmaceutical companies. Nevertheless, the bigger point is worth thinking about: good health shouldn’t feel like a luxury that only a few can afford. ❤️
