Why Do We Judge A Book By Its Cover Even When We Know Better?

First Impressions Are Strange

We all know we're not supposed to judge a book by its cover

And yet, somehow, we still do

Not just with books either

We do it with people, places, restaurants, clothes, houses, even food.

We see something that looks interesting and immediately assume it must be good

Or we see something that doesn't catch our attention and decide it's probably not worth our time

It's funny because most of us know better

We know that appearances can be misleading

We know someone can look intimidating and turn out to be incredibly kind

Someone can seem quiet and have the funniest personality once you actually talk to them

A restaurant that looks completely ordinary from outside can serve the best food you've ever had

And a beautifully decorated place can sometimes leave you thinking, That's it? 😭

Still, our brains seem to make these little decisions almost instantly

Maybe it's because first impressions are easier than actually getting to know something

Looking takes seconds

Understanding takes time

And we are impatient creatures

We want to know what something is before we've given it enough time to show us

I think that's especially true with people

You meet someone for five minutes and somehow your brain has already created a tiny profile

Quiet

Confident

Rude

Funny

Awkward

Interesting

Boring

And sometimes you're completely wrong

The person you thought wouldn't talk much becomes the one who never stops once they're comfortable

The person who seemed unfriendly was probably just nervous

The person who looked like they had everything figured out might actually be just as confused as everyone else

And then there are people who surprise you in the opposite direction

Someone can seem wonderful at first and slowly reveal a completely different side

Which makes me wonder whether first impressions are actually useful or just convenient

Maybe they're not meant to tell us the truth

Maybe they're simply our brain's first guess

Pehli nazar mein kisi ko samajh lena aasaan hai, lekin kisi ko waqai samajhne mein waqt lagta hai

And perhaps that's why getting to know someone properly feels different

You start noticing the things you couldn't see at first

The way they treat people when nobody is watching

How they react when something doesn't go their way

Whether they listen or just wait for their turn to speak

Whether their kindness is something they show only when it's convenient

Those things don't fit into a first impression

They take time

Maybe that's also why we shouldn't be too quick to decide what something is

A book might have a boring cover and an incredible story

A person might have an awkward introduction and become someone you genuinely enjoy knowing

A place might look ordinary and become one of your favourite places

Sometimes the best things don't make a great first impression

They simply get better once you stay long enough to notice them

And maybe that's the part we forget

We don't always need to immediately decide whether we like something

Sometimes we can just be curious

Give it another page

Another conversation

Another visit

Another chance

Because not everything worth knowing knows how to introduce itself properly

And maybe that's why the old saying still makes sense

Dont judge a book by it's cover

Not because the cover doesn't matter

But because sometimes the story is much better than the first page makes you expect
