A little life update: I recently moved to Spain with my family, and honestly, it’s been a mix of excitement, gratitude, challenges, and a lot of learning.

Moving to another country has always sounded exciting. You imagine discovering new places, experiencing a different culture, trying new food, learning a new language, and creating beautiful memories with your family. And yes, all those things are wonderful. But there’s also another side of moving abroad that people don’t always talk about.
It’s the feeling of starting from zero in some ways.

Things that used to be so simple back home suddenly become things you have to figure out. Going to the supermarket, understanding letters and documents, making appointments, communicating with people, or even asking a simple question can take so much more effort when you’re still learning the language.

I’m also adjusting to a different culture and a different pace of life while trying to build a routine for my family. There are days when everything feels exciting, and I feel so grateful that we get to experience this new chapter. Then there are days when I miss the familiarity of home, the convenience of knowing how everything works, and the comfort of being surrounded by people and places I’ve known for years.

And I think that’s one of the biggest lessons I’m learning: you can be grateful for where you are and still miss where you came from. Both feelings can exist at the same time.

As a parent, there’s also another layer to this experience. You’re not just adjusting for yourself; you’re helping your child adjust, too. You want them to feel comfortable, make friends, and enjoy their new environment, even while you’re still figuring things out yourself. Sometimes, you have to be brave for your family even on days when you don’t feel particularly brave.

I’m learning to celebrate the little wins. Understanding something in Spanish that I wouldn’t have understood before. Successfully completing an errand on my own. Finding my way around a new neighbourhood. Getting through a difficult day and realising that, little by little, things are becoming more familiar.

Maybe that’s what starting over really looks like. Not one big, dramatic transformation, but a collection of small moments where you realise you’re slowly finding your place.

I know there’s still so much to learn, and I don’t expect to have everything figured out overnight. For now, I’m trying to be patient with myself, enjoy the experience, and remember why we took this step in the first place.

To anyone who’s moved to another country, started over in a new city, or gone through a major life change: what was the hardest part of adjusting to your new life? And what helped you finally start feeling at home?

When you move to a new country, are you more likely to
