Mira ran.
She didn’t know where she was going.
There were no corridors, no doors, no signs pointing toward safety. Only endless shelves stretching farther than her eyes could see, their golden lights flickering above her like distant stars.
Behind her came the sound of footsteps. Not footsteps, exactly. It was the sound of pages being turned.Hundreds of them.Thousands.
Fast.Getting closer.“Don’t look back!” the stranger shouted.Mira almost did.Almost.Instead, she tightened her grip around the leather-bound book and kept running.
“What do I do?” she yelled.“Find a door!”“What door?”“Any door!”“That is not helpful!”“It isn’t supposed to be!”
Mira turned sharply around a bookshelf and nearly crashed into a wall.Except it wasn’t a wall.It was a bookshelf. She stumbled backwards.
The shelf stretched so high that its top disappeared into darkness. Every book on it was labelled with a name.Hundreds of names. Some were familiar.

Most weren’t.Then she saw one that made her stop breathing.MIRA.Her fingers slowly reached toward it.“Don’t!”The stranger grabbed her wrist.
“That’s not yours.”Mira stared at the book.“But it has my name.”“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t touch it.”The sound behind them grew louder. The Editor was coming.Mira pulled her hand away.“Then where are we supposed to go?”
The stranger looked around. For the first time, they looked afraid.“I don’t know.”Mira stared at them.“You don’t know?”“I’ve never brought anyone here before.”“You said the library accepted me.”
“It did.”“Then why is that thing chasing me?”The stranger hesitated.“Because it isn’t.”Mira frowned.“What?”The stranger looked directly at the leather book in her hands.
“It’s not chasing you.”A cold feeling settled in Mira’s stomach.“Then what is it chasing?”The stranger whispered,“Your story.”The shelves around them suddenly trembled.A book fell somewhere in the distance.
Then another. Then hundreds. The entire library seemed to shudder.Mira looked down at the book in her hands. The cover had changed. The words that had appeared earlier—CHAPTER TWO HAS BEGUN—were gone.
New words were appearing.Slowly.One letter at a time.MIRA RAN.She stared.“No.”Another sentence appeared.
MIRA WAS AFRAID.Her heart began beating faster.“No, no, no…”The stranger took a step backwards.“Don’t read it.”“I can’t stop seeing it!”“Close the book.”Mira slammed it shut. The library went silent.
For three seconds. Then something whispered her name.“Mira.”She froze. The voice had come from behind her.It sounded exactly like her own.She turned.Nothing.“Mira.”Again.This time from the shelf beside her.
She stepped away.“Mira.”From above.“Mira.”From somewhere beneath the floor. Her name echoed through the library until she couldn’t tell which voice was real. Then the Editor appeared. It stood at the end of the aisle.
Still.Watching.Its body was made of words.Sentences moved beneath its skin like living things, disappearing and rewriting themselves every second. But now there was something different.A face was beginning to form.
Mira’s face. She couldn’t breathe. The stranger grabbed her arm.“Run.”They sprinted between the shelves. This time, Mira didn’t ask where they were going. She simply followed. They passed books with titles that changed whenever she looked at them. They passed doors that opened into oceans.Windows showing places that couldn’t possibly exist.A staircase that climbed downward.A room filled entirely with clocks.
And then—A library card fell from the ceiling. It landed directly in front of Mira. She stopped. The card was old and yellow. Her name was written on it.MIRA SEN.Underneath was a date.2007.Mira’s eyes widened.“That’s my birth year.”The stranger looked at the card.Their expression changed.“You need to leave.”“Why?”“Because the library doesn’t remember your name.”
Mira looked at them.“Then what?”The stranger pointed toward the endless shelves.“It remembers your entire life.”The Editor screamed.

Not loudly. Not like a person. It sounded like a thousand books being ripped open at once. The lights above them went out.One by one.Darkness swallowed the library.
Mira felt the leather book being pulled from her hands. She held on.Something else pulled from the opposite side. The Editor.“Mira!” the stranger shouted. She pulled harder. The book suddenly opened by itself.
A bright golden light exploded from its pages. For one brief second, Mira saw something written there. Not a sentence. Not a chapter.A name.ELIAS.The stranger stared at it.
Their face went completely pale.“You know that name?” Mira asked. They didn’t answer.“Who is Elias?”The stranger stepped backwards.“Mira…”“Who is Elias?”The Editor stopped moving.
For the first time, it seemed frightened. Then every book in the library slammed shut at exactly the same moment. The sound echoed through infinity. And a voice spoke from somewhere deep within the shelves.A voice older than the library itself.“The boy who was erased.”Mira looked at the stranger. They were crying. And for the first time since she had entered the library, they said something that wasn’t part of its rules.
“My name is Elias.”The leather-bound book closed. The lights returned. And somewhere far behind them, a new shelf appeared. On it was a single book.
Its cover read:MIRA — THE END.But beneath the title, someone had written three words.
