Last Sunday, I visited the school where I had spent some of the best years of my life. I hadn't planned to go there. I was simply passing by when I noticed the old building behind its familiar gate. For a moment, I wanted to see it again.
The playground looked smaller than I remembered. The stairs seemed shorter, and the corridor where we used to run during lunch breaks was almost empty. I stood outside, smiling at the little things I still remembered.
I remembered sitting with my friends, sharing lunch boxes, complaining about homework, and waiting impatiently for the final bell. Back then, an ordinary school day felt like something we wanted to escape from.
We were always talking about growing up. We believed life would become exciting once we finished school. We wanted freedom, money, new places, and a future where nobody would tell us what to do.
Now, standing outside that building, I realized how quickly everything had changed.
Some classmates had moved to different cities. Some were working, some were studying, and others were still figuring things out, just like me. We rarely spoke now, but whenever I remembered those days, I felt connected to a version of myself I hadn't thought about in years.
I didn't feel sad about it. I was actually happy that I had experienced those moments.
On my way home, I passed the little shop where we used to buy snacks after school. It had a new signboard, different products, and another person sitting behind the counter.Everything was changing, even the places I thought would always remain the same.
That day, I understood something simple.
We don't always notice when a chapter of life ends. Sometimes, we realize it years later, when we return to an ordinary place and find that it no longer feels ordinary.
Maybe growing up isn't about forgetting the past.
Maybe it's about carrying those memories with us while making room for new ones.
And perhaps, one day, today's ordinary places will become tomorrow's favourite memories too.
