“Guests Are Almost There”

There are few sentences that can create instant panic in a household like: “We’re almost there.”
The moment someone says guests are coming, the entire house enters emergency mode.
Suddenly, everyone notices things that have been sitting there for days. The cushion is crooked. There’s a cup on the table. The curtains need fixing. Someone spots a tiny dust particle and reacts like the whole house has failed an inspection.
And the funniest part? The guests are probably coming just to sit, have tea, and leave. But we’re preparing as if the house is about to be featured in a luxury home magazine.
One person starts sweeping, another wipes the table, someone is arranging cushions, and someone else is shouting instructions from a completely different room.
“Put that inside!” “Don’t leave this here!” “Is the bathroom clean?” “Who kept this on the sofa?”
The same people who were comfortably ignoring the mess five minutes ago are now moving like they’re competing in a cleaning championship.
And there’s always that one room where everything gets thrown in because guests won’t be going there. The door gets closed, and everyone silently agrees that the room no longer exists.
Then comes the final inspection.
The floor must look perfect. The cushions must be aligned. The table must be empty but also ready for snacks. The house has to look like
nobody actually lives there.
Someone suddenly remembers the tea cups aren’t ready. Another person asks if there’s anything to serve with tea. And somehow, the person who was cleaning is now expected to change clothes and look presentable too.
Then comes the classic question: “How far are they?”
The answer is usually “just nearby,” which somehow means anywhere
between two minutes and half an hour.
And just when everything is finally done, someone says, “They’re here.”
Now the whole family suddenly acts normal. Everyone sits calmly, as if they weren’t just running around the house like it was a fire drill.
The guests walk in and say, “You didn’t have to do all this!”
Of course we didn’t. But the panic had already taken over.
Honestly, guests don’t even need to arrive to make the house clean. Their “almost there” message is enough.
Tell me your household’s guest-arrival routine: are you calmly prepared, or does everyone start panic-cleaning like the house is being judged? 😂
And once the guests finally leave, the whole family can breathe again. The hidden room gets opened, the cushions return to their usual positions, and everyone starts complaining about how tiring the visit was.
The funniest part is that the house probably looks exactly the same as it did before the panic-cleaning began.
At this point, “guests are almost there” should come with a warning label. 😂
