According to the modern Japanese urban legend, Hachishakusama is a mysterious, unusually tall woman who is often described as wearing a white dress and a wide-brimmed hat.
The legend says she appears around rural areas, especially near houses and quiet roads. People who encounter her may hear an unusual sound coming from her:
“Po… po… po…”The frightening part of the story is that she is said to become particularly interested in certain people, especially children. Once she has taken notice of someone, escaping her attention is supposedly extremely difficult. One popular version tells of a young boy visiting his grandparents in the countryside. While standing outside, he notices a very tall woman beyond the
garden wall. At first, he assumes she’s simply a distant passerby. Then he hears it:“Po… po… po…”He tells his grandfather about the woman.
His grandfather’s reaction immediately changes. He recognizes the description. The family realizes that the boy may have encountered Hachishakusama.
According to the legend, the adults desperately try to protect him by keeping him inside and seeking help from people who supposedly know how to ward her off. The story becomes a race against time, because Hachishakusama is believed to follow the person she has chosen.Of course, Hachishakusama is an urban legend, not a documented supernatural event. Its exact
origins are unclear, and versions of the story have circulated online in Japan since the 2000s.But that’s what makes it such an unsettling modern legend—the story feels less like an ancient myth and more like something someone could whisper to you while sitting in a quiet Japanese village at night. And if you ever hear a distant “po… po… po…” after reading this… maybe don’t look outside. 👀
If you heard a strange "po... po... po..." sound and saw a tall figure lurking nearby, you would
