learning to choose myself

For a long time, I thought I had to explain myself to everyone.
If I didn't reply quickly, I felt like I had to explain why. If I didn't want to go somewhere, I felt guilty. If I was quiet, Ithought people would assume something was wrong. Even when someone misunderstood me, I would spend hours thinking about how to make them understand what I actually meantIt was exhausting.
One day, something very small happened.
I had made plans with a friend, but I wasn't feeling good that day. Nothing serious had happened. I was just tired and wanted to.stay home. When I said I couldn't come, my friend got upset and asked why I was always changing plans.
Usually, I would have started explaining everything. That day, I didn't.
I simply said, “I just need some time for myself. I hope you understand.”
Then I put my phone away.
At first, I felt uncomfortable. I kept checkingmy phone, wondering if they had replied. I started thinking that maybe I had been rude or selfish.
But after some time, I realized I didn't actually do anything wrong.
I was just tired.
I was allowed to rest.
I was allowed to say no.
And I didn't have to write a whole paragraph to prove that my reason was valid. That moment made me think about how often we forget to be kind to ourselves because we are too busy making sure everyone else is comfortable.
We say yes when we want to say no.We smile when we're hurt.
We stay in conversations that make us uncomfortable.
We keep explaining our intentions to people who have already decided what they want to believe. And sometimes, we forget that our peace matters too.
I don't think we should stop caring about people. We should still listen, apologize when we're wrong, and try to understand others. But there is a difference between caring about people and constantly trying to prove yourself to them.
Since that day, I've started doing something simple.
Before explaining myself, I ask, “Do I reallyneed to explain this, or am I just afraid of being misunderstood?”
Sometimes, the answer is that I don't need to explain anything.
People who genuinely care about me may not understand everything immediately, butthey will at least try.
And those who don't want to understand me will probably find a reason anyway.
I'm still learning this.
I still overthink sometimes. I still worry about what people think. I'm not suddenly acompletely different person.
But now, when I need a little space, I give myself permission to take it.
Because growing up isn't always about becoming stronger for everyone else.Sometimes, it's simply learning that you don't have to explain every part of yourself to deserve peace.
When you need time for yourself, it's better to
