Suddenly I Know What I’m Doing

There is something weird about being alone in public
The moment you leave the house alone, you suddenly become very aware of yourself
Where am I supposed to look
Am I walking too fast
Am I walking too slowly
Why does everyone look like they know exactly where they're going 😭
You enter a shop alone and suddenly even choosing what to buy feels like a serious decision You pick something up
Put it back
Pretend you're comparing two things
Walk around for another minute just so it doesn't look like you came in for one tiny thing And then, somehow, after a while, something changes
You stop caring
You realise nobody is actually paying that much attention to you
Everyone is busy with their own shopping, their own phone, their own thoughts, their own life
And suddenly you're comfortable You walk around at your own speed
You take your time looking at things
You sit somewhere without wondering whether you look lonely
You order exactly what you want And weirdly, being alone starts feeling less awkward and more peaceful
I think there's a very specific kind of confidence that comes from doing things alone Not the loud kind
Not the “I don't need anyone” kind
Just the quiet confidence of knowing that you can take yourself somewhere and still have a good time You don't need to wait for everyone's schedule to match yours
You don't have to ask, “Are you free?”
You don't have to change your plans because someone cancelled
You can simply decide, I want to go
And go
Akele hona aur akela mehsoos karna shayad do bilkul alag cheezein hain
Sometimes being alone is actually when you notice how much freedom you have
You can spend twenty minutes looking at books
Try clothes you probably won't buy
Sit in a café and stare outside
Walk around a market without anyone asking how long you're going to take
Or simply wander around with no real plan And nobody cares
That's probably the best part
You don't have to perform
You don't have to keep a conversation going You don't have to make sure everyone else is having a good time
You can just exist
I also think being alone in public teaches you something about how much we imagine other people are watching us
That person who looked in your direction probably wasn't judging you
The group that laughed probably wasn't laughing at you The cashier isn't going to remember what you bought tomorrow
Most people are far too busy being the main character in their own lives
And once you realise that, public spaces become strangely easier
Maybe that's why the first few times doing something alone feel uncomfortable, but later they become normal.
The first solo café visit feels like an event
Eventually, it's just Tuesday
The first time shopping alone feels awkward
Eventually, you're walking around with a bag in one hand and your phone in the other like you've been doing it forever 😭Maybe confidence isn't always about becoming fearless
Sometimes it's simply realising that you can feel awkward and still do the thing anyway And honestly, there is something quite peaceful about becoming comfortable in your own company Not because you don't enjoy being around people
But because you know you can enjoy your own company too.
When you're out alone and feeling self-conscious, you
Your vote is final.
