The cool dude

I had joined a new organisation. In my team I was the only new person who had joined. I was still learning the dynamics in the team. Needless to say that I was acting carefully with everyone. I was a polite and respectful to everyone but with none of the people I was acting too friendly. I had been keeping the relations cordial and formal instead of friendly.

In our team there was a popular person called Chirag. Everyone would call Chirag as the cool dude. I did not know the reason for it and I did not even ask anybody why they considered Chirag to be a cool dude. I decided to figure it out myself or let that slide completely.

Then came Thursday. I was surprised to see everyone acting extra politely especially to Chirag. Instead of calling him the cool dude, that day they were calling him Your Majesty or Big Boss. I could not understand why there was such a sudden change in the demeanor of everyone. Chirag rose from his seat and announced, "my dearest colleagues, please come to my desk one by one to provide your requests. I will try to see the most popular ones and they would be attended. If you have any special request those too should be registered today. I will try to attend to the special request as the time permits and as per the availability. Please be patient and please queue up in a civil manner".

I was completely surprised. I could not understand why such announcement was made. I had no clue as to understand what was going on in the office. However I did see that one by one people had been going to Chirag's desk and he had been noting down what people had been saying. I decided not to participate in this activity till I had a clarity towards what was happening.

Towards the end of the day Chirag approached me, "hello new girl. We have not met yet so I decided to approach you myself. You must have known my name by now. I would like to know about you". While I was not impressed with Chirags way of approaching, I still considered it to be polite and professional to take a stand from his side. I introduced myself to him.
Chirag asked me, " today I saw that you did not come to my desk to place any requests. Do you have no request from your side?"
I informed him that I did not know what activity was going on and decided not to participate until I understand the activity. Chirag smiled and called his friend Rohit to explain.

Rohit had been assigned to train me hence I appreciated that Chirag had asked him to explain. Chirag left my desk and Rohit took over, " Chirag gets new movies in amazing print. Even the newly released films are available with him. Every thursday we tell him which movies we want and he creates a list. On Friday he would give us most of those movies".

Overall I found this activity to be highly suspicious. I had many questions towards it and I decided to ask these questions to Rohit.

One thing was for sure, I did not want to be a part of this activity.
