The first letter arrived on a Tuesday.
There was nothing unusual about the envelope.
It was small, cream-coloured and sealed with dark blue wax.
What was unusual was that nobody had put it there.
Mira found it on her windowsill when she woke up.
She lived on the third floor.
There was no balcony outside her window, no tree close enough for a bird to leave something behind and certainly no reason for an envelope to be sitting neatly beside her alarm clock.
She picked it up.
Her name was written on the front.
Mira Vale.
The handwriting looked strangely familiar.
She opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.

Mira,
Don't go to the old fountain tomorrow.
Whatever you hear, don't answer it.
Especially if it calls you by your mother's name.
You have until sunset.

Mira thought this is a strange letter because there was no signature.
Mira read it twice and then she laughed.
Someone was definitely playing a prank, she thought, most probably her younger brother.
She folded the letter and put it in her desk drawer. She thought it was just some lame prank.
By the next morning, she had even forgotten about it.
Until she walked past the old fountain.
