There are certain sounds that immediately make you question every decision that brought you to that exact moment. For my family, one of those sounds is the pressure cooker.
It was a completely normal Sunday afternoon. My mother was in the kitchen, my father was watching television, my brother was pretending to study, and I was doing what every responsible person does on a Sunday—avoiding all responsibilities.
Then the pressure cooker whistled. One whistle.Everyone ignored it.Second whistle. My mother shouted from the kitchen, “Someone turn the gas down!”
Nobody moved.Third whistle. My father lowered the television volume.Fourth whistle. My brother looked up from his phone.“Is it supposed to make that much noise?”
he asked.Nobody answered.Fifth whistle. At this point, the entire family was staring at the kitchen entrance as though the cooker had personally threatened us.
My mother slowly walked into the kitchen.“What happened?” my father asked.“Nothing.”That “nothing” was not reassuring. She came back holding the cooker lid.Apparently, she had forgotten to put the little pressure regulator on top.
For five seconds, everyone remained silent. Then my father said, very seriously, “So what exactly was making the sound?”My mother looked at him.“The cooker.”“That much I understood.”Nobody knew what to say.My brother started laughing.
Then I laughed. Then my mother laughed. Then my father, who had spent the previous five minutes looking like he was preparing to evacuate the house, started laughing too.
The entire crisis had been caused by absolutely nothing.Or so we thought.Ten minutes later, another whistle came from the kitchen.
Silence.Everyone froze. My brother whispered, “Again?”My father immediately stood up.“I’m checking.”“You’re not going anywhere,” my mother said.“Why?”
“Because last time you checked, you stood three metres away and shouted instructions.”“That was strategic.”“You hid behind the refrigerator.”“I was assessing the situation.”I was laughing so hard that I nearly fell off the sofa.
Eventually, my mother went into the kitchen and discovered that this time the cooker was perfectly fine.It was the pressure cooker on the neighbouring stove.Nobody had noticed. My father slowly sat down again.
“I think,” he announced, “we need a family meeting.”“About what?” my brother asked.“Kitchen safety.”My mother rolled her eyes.

And that was how an ordinary Sunday afternoon turned into a twenty-minute family meeting about a pressure cooker that had done absolutely nothing wrong. The funniest part?
By the end of the meeting, my father had appointed himself “Head of Pressure Cooker Security.”Nobody had given him the position. He simply promoted himself. And somehow, everyone accepted it.
And from that day onward, whenever the cooker whistled, everyone stopped talking, stared at Dad, and waited for his official investigation to begin.

When the pressure cooker starts whistling, you should

I write about the little things we often ignore—the quiet thoughts, ordinary moments, and emotions that stay with us long after the day ends.
