There is something strange about missing things that once felt completely ordinary.
Sometimes I find myself remembering a random day from years ago and wondering why that particular moment stayed with me. It wasn’t a birthday, acelebration, or anything important. Nothing remarkable happened. Yet somehow, I remember the smallest details—the place I was sitting, the people around me, the weather, even the feeling of that day.Maybe that’s because we don’t always miss the event itself. We miss how life felt when that event was still possible.
We miss the people we could call without hesitation. We miss places we no longer visit. We miss versions of ourselves who didn’t know how much was about to change.
And sometimes, the hardest part is realising that while we are busy missing the past, there are things in our present that we might someday miss just as much. The room we complain about. The routine that feels boring. The person whose messages sometimes feel annoying.
The familiar journey we wish would end faster.Right now, these things may feel completely ordinary. Maybe even irritating. But life has a strange habit of changing things without asking
whether we are ready.A person moves away. A friend becomes distant. A favourite place closes. A routine disappears. We grow older and suddenly realise that something weonce thought would always be there has quietly become part of our past. That’s why I think appreciation doesn’t always have to be dramatic.
It can be as simple as staying a little longer in a conversation instead of rushing away. Replying to the message instead of thinking, “I’ll do it later.”

Sitting with someone for a few extra minutes. Looking out of the window during a familiar journey instead of staring at a screen. Not because we should be afraid of losing everything, but because we are aware enough to understand that nothing stays exactly the same forever.
We often imagine that the happiest moments of our lives will be obvious. We expect them to arrive with celebrations, photographs, excitement, and stories worth telling.
But maybe some of our happiest moments are hiding inside ordinary days.Maybe happiness is also the familiar voice from another room.
The meal someone made without being asked. The friend who sends a completely random message. The laughter that happens in the middle of an otherwise normal evening.
The comfort of knowing exactly where you belong. We don’t have to turn every moment into a memory. We don’t have to constantly worry about losing what we love.
We just have to be present enough to recognise that some of what we have today is already precious.Because one day, we may look back at this exact version of our life and realise that we were living through a chapter we would have given anything to read again. And maybe the best way to honour the past isn’t to keep living in it.
Maybe it’s to pay a little more attention to the present.Because today’s ordinary life might quietly become tomorrow’s favourite memory.

I write about the little things we often ignore—the quiet thoughts, ordinary moments, and emotions that stay with us long after the day ends.
