There are certain foods my wife does not like. There are some that she absolutely can’t stand, like cilantro. She has the gene that makes it taste like soap. Then there are the ones that she says she hates, but doesn’t notice if you chop it up small enough. That is how I manage to get mushrooms into almost every meatloaf and meat sauce I’ve ever made for her. Finally, you’ve got the ones that she thinks she hates because she’s never had it cooked properly, or because she doesn’t know there are more than one variety.
I’ll admit that I like my toys in the kitchen. If I’m making chicken breast, my go to cooking appliance is the sous vide. One hour at 159 degrees and you have juicy, perfectly cooked,
Perfectly safe chicken breast. It’s perfect for
Chicken Salad, or to add in to almost any pasta
Or veggie dish. Meanwhile, when my wife was growing up, the only way she ever got chicken breast was as part of a hammered bowl of chicken and bisquick dumplings. Even in the gravy, the chicken was so dry that it would come apart like sawdust.
This takes me to the first time that I made chicken for my wife. It was juicy, it was tender, it was flavorful, and it was bisquick free. She bit into it and made a face. “This chicken tastes funny.” I was a little confused. Mine tasted fine. “What’s wrong with it?” I was a little worried her chicken might have been undercooked. “Its really juicy. Chicken is usually really dry.”
“lol. There’s nothing wrong with it. This is just your first time having chicken that isn’t overcooked.”
Next up. Zucchini.
