There was a time when I used to check my phone way more than I’d like to admit.
I’d check whether someone had replied. Then I’d check again five minutes later. Then I’d tell myself I wasn’t waiting for anything, while literally opening the same app for the tenth time.
Sometimes it wasn’t even a message. I’d check someone’s profile, their last seen, their stories, whether they had posted something new, whether they had seen something I posted. Basically, I always found some reason to check. And the funny thing is, checking never actually made me feel better.
If there was a new message, I’d overthink the reply. If there wasn’t one, I’d wonder why. If they posted something, I’d start analysing it. If they didn’t, I’d wonder what they were doing.
It was exhausting, but I had gotten so used to it that I didn’t even realize how much of my attention it was taking.
Then one day, I just stopped.
Not dramatically. There wasn’t some big decision where I deleted every app and promised myself I’d never care again.
I simply got tired.
Tired of checking something that I already knew probably wouldn’t give me the answer I wanted.
So I put my phone down.
At first, I kept reaching for it automatically. I’d unlock my phone without even thinking, open an app, and then remember that there was actually nothing I needed to check.
It felt weird.
Like I was breaking a habit I didn’t even know I had.
But after a while, something changed.
I started noticing how much time I had spent waiting for things that weren’t in my control.
A reply wasn’t going to decide how my day went.
Someone viewing my story wasn’t going to tell me how they felt about me.
A profile update wasn’t going to give me the answers I was looking for.
And once I stopped checking, I realized how peaceful not knowing could actually feel.
I still get curious sometimes. I’m still human.
But now, when I feel that urge to check something just because I’m anxious about it, I try to pause.
Because sometimes checking isn’t about wanting information.
Sometimes it’s just wanting reassurance.
And I’m slowly learning that I don’t have to keep looking outside myself for it.
The day I stopped checking wasn’t the day I stopped caring.
It was the day I realized I didn’t want to spend so much of my time waiting for someone else to make me feel okay.

When you feel anxious and want reassurance, do you
