My first day as a teacher, no one listened to me. I was 22 years old, just completed B.Ed. I got job in a private school for Class 8. Night before, I bought a new blue kurti and ironed it twice. I prepared myintroduction - Good morning students, I am your new English teacher... I practiced in front of mirror.
Next morning I reached at 7:30 AM. They gave me Class 8-B. I took my register and bag and entered. I said loudly Good Morning class! Only 4-5 students in front bench replied. Rest were busy talking, fighting for pen. One boy was sleeping on last bench.
I kept my bag on table. My hands were shaking. I wrote my name on blackboard but writing was going up because of shaking. I said silence please. No one became silent. I said again louder, please keep quiet. One girl shouted - Ma'am ye nahi sunta, ye roz aise hi karta hai and full class laughed. I also smiled a little because I didn't know what to do.
I started topic Present Tense. One boy said Ma'am ye toh ho gaya last month. I got confused. Senior had given me wrong topic. I had prepared only that. So I said okay we will do revision. I asked what is Present Continuous? No one raised hand. I pointed to one boy - you tell. He stood and said very casually Ma'am mujhe nahi aata. I said try karo. He smiled and sat down.
For full 40 minutes I was speaking alone Like talking to a wall. No one was listening, no one writing. When bell rang, I said we will continue tomorrow. No one said thank you Ma'am. They just ran out pushing each other.
I came to staffroom and sat alone in corner. I wanted to cry. I thought maybe teaching is not for me. I am not strict enough. I can't control a class.
Next day morning, a small quiet girl from same class came to staffroom and gave me a small Mango Bite toffee and said in low voice Ma'am kal aap achi lagi mujhe and she ran away. That one toffee kept me in teaching. I still remember it.

On your first day teaching, when the students ignored you, you
