My Mumbai Hostel Odyssey

Being a first-year student in Mumbai and staying in a hostel truly feels like living multiple lives at once, switching between them daily. Some mornings, I wake up feeling super independent and confident, ready to conquer the day's challenges, empowered by the freedom of making my own choices and navigating this massive city. Then there are other days when I just deeply miss home, my family, and the familiar comfort zone of my own room, wishing I could just curl up and disappear for a bit. The city itself moves at an incredible, almost overwhelming pace, and it can get mentally exhausting trying to keep up with everything.

It’s a constant juggle of:

• Keeping up with demanding classes and new academic pressures

• Navigating an entirely new social circle and different personalities

• Meeting the unspoken expectations from professors, friends, and even myself

Hostel life has been a crash course in adulting, honestly. It has definitely taught me so much about how to adjust to shared spaces and new routines, communicate effectively with diverse people, and perhaps most importantly, set boundaries for my time and personal space, even when it feels incredibly uncomfortable to do so. I’m still very much figuring out how to find that elusive balance amidst all this chaos, but I'm slowly, truly learning what works best for me and how to carve out my own little corner of peace here.
