Ten Years, One Promise

Riya met Arjun on her first college day when rain flooded the courtyard. He offered his umbrella, and she laughed, saying she preferred getting wet. That small moment became friendship. Riya came from a Scheduled Caste family; Arjun belonged to a traditional Brahmin household that valued old customs despite differences. They studied together, shared cheap canteen tea, and waited outside examination halls. Without realizing it, their ordinary college days slowly became precious memories for both. After two years, Arjun finally confessed his love beside the college library. Riya smiled through tears because she had secretly waited for those beautiful words. They knew their families might reject them. Still, they promised not to run away, hide forever, or abandon their love when things became difficult together. After graduation, they started working. Their first salaries were small, but they celebrated together, sometimes sharing one meal because both were saving for their future. Then Arjun told his parents. His mother cried quietly, while his father said, “Love may be temporary, but family reputation lasts forever that night.” Riya faced similar pain. A relative told her that marrying Arjun would bring insults to his family. That night, she cried quietly beside her mother. Arjun wanted to fight everyone immediately, but Riya stopped him. She said, “If our love is real, we must prove it through patience, not anger.” For years, they built their lives carefully. They supported their parents financially, respected both families, and never insulted anyone’s beliefs or traditions at home together. Some relatives mocked them. Others stopped inviting them to family gatherings. Yet every rejection made their promise stronger: they would marry when they could stand. After ten years, Arjun returned with Riya. He did not ask his parents to choose between family and love; he asked them to accept her. His father remembered the boy who once feared society. Seeing Arjun standing confidently beside Riya, he finally understood his son had truly grown much wiser.
