I especially do not like people who claim themselves to be fitness and nutrition experts. My main issue with them is that if they considered themselves as expert that was completely okay with me; but when they start advising other people on what they should eat while they are enjoying their food, it bothers me a lot. One of them was Sonia, my colleague.

Sonia used to think that she was a health and nutrition expert. Sonia was a fitness enthusiast and she definitely was in a good shape. Somehow I had become her primary target. Mind you I am neither overweight or obese - potentially I was a couple of kilograms lighter than the recommended weight for my height and age. Yet she felt the obligation to advise me on my eating habits.

Once I had sat at my desk and was having my breakfast. I had apples in my tiffin which I was having while working. Sonia felt the need to correct me here, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You should eat something filling for breakfast instead of fruits". I completely ignored her because I never asked for her advise or opinion on what I should eat for breakfast. I was completely fine with whatever I was eating until and unless it was healthy and compatible with my body.

Once at lunch Soniya came and sat with me at the table. I had brought masala rice from home and lightly sauted sprouts, along with that I was having curd because it had become too dry for me. Apparently Sonia had a problem with that, "you must avoid consumption of oil. It is not good for health. It will taste good right now but later on you would gain a lot of wait because of it". My meal did not have much oil. Hence it definitely bothered me why she felt the need to comment on my meal. I politely informed her that I was well aware for the content of oil that was present in my meal and she should not worry about it. But still Sonia decided to give me a lecture on the use of oils. I had to shut her down telling her that I am a healthcare professional and know very well what was the importance of oils in food.

Later one evening I was having coffee and Sonia definitely had a problem with that. I was having the coffee without sugar but Sonia did not know that. Sonia grabbed the opportunity to lecture me on how harmful sugars are. This became the breaking point for me. I had always absolutely hated all those people who comment on others food intake. Sonia had been attacking me again and again for my choices of food. According to her those were not healthy choices. This was the time I decided not to hold back and teach her a lesson, "Sonia you do not have any qualification or training to identify what is healthy or unhealthy. Watching influencer's videos on social media does not make you an expert. You mention only what the influencers mention without reading anything on your own. You are as clueless as them. You think highly of yourself that is fine. You have a horrible habit of speaking about the food choices when someone is eating which is really harmful for them. Absolutely nobody likes when someone makes a remark about their food choices. You think you are doing good for the society but in fact none of it is helpful. Everyone here is a grown up and they know very well what they should eat. Lastly if you want to know about me I check with the doctors what I should eat and rely only on their advice. So I guess I have made myself very clear. Henceforth do not come to me with your unsolicited food advises".

That was the last time when Sonia came to me with her advises and opinions about food. I was glad that there was noone to comment on my food choices.

I do not like when we are eating and someone says, "oh so much sugar and oil. so unhealthy". Like dude, did I ask you? I am shoving it down your throat? just go away and let me enjoy my meal.

Unsolicited advice is annoying enough, but commenting on someone’s food while they’re eating takes it to another level. Boundaries matter. 👏

I get the point here. There’s a big difference between sharing what works for you and acting like there’s one rule that everyone has to follow. Fitness and nutrition can look very different from person to person, so giving advice without knowing someone’s actual situation can sometimes do more harm than good. It’s always better to share information responsibly instead of making people feel guilty about what they eat.

Exactly. Nowadays people show off their expertise earned from social media and make others look bad.
