The elevator conversation
The lift stopped on several floors and each pause made me check the time on my phone. A neighbour entered carrying paint cans and apologized for slowing everyone down . We exchanged a joke about the lift being more patient than either of us it was the first conversation we had.
When the doors opened, we went separate ways, but I found myself smiling on the stairs later. I often treat waiting as stolen time, although it sometimes gives people a chance to speak. The delay had not changed my schedule much. It had simply made the building feel less anonymous.
