Have you ever visited any household where you felt that only one person does the entire housework? I am sure you must have felt so. Generally most of the responsibilities of the household fall on the women. Irrespective of whether they are working, the responsibility of most household work falls on them. I believe that the responsibilities of household should not fall on exclusively women but it should be distributed among every family member.
The biggest questions here is how to achieve that? The simplest way to achieve this is to make chores into family rituals. This way each and every person would contribute to the household work.
Let's make this clear with examples. Most household work is around cooking cleaning laundry and groceries. These major tasks should be divided into smaller task so that we would be able to involve everyone in the family.
Children who are older than three years but younger than 10 years should also be taught on performing housework so that they learn the life skills. These children can be taught to peel the vegetables, arrange the food on the table, fold the laundry et cetera. These tasks are simple yet essential. These tasks also do not require use of sharp utensils or tools hence they will be safer for younger children. While growing up when children are assigned with these tasks they learn about the family responsibilities as well as teamwork. This task should sound rewarding to them, so they would enjoy them and feel more responsible.
Young adults should be given the tasks which require skills. They can be assigned with the task such as chopping the vegetables, helping with cooking, helping with the laundry etc. Just like the young children when these tasks are assigned to the young adults they would learn the life skills at the same time they would be on their path to become independent. These rituals will help them to be independent if they decide to move away from the home for education or job. They would definitely find these skills helpful.
Adults should take any work that is assigned to them and complete that work with atmost responsibility. They should know that they are primarily responsible to complete a certain task. There task should be fixed which would be their ritual but they should also be ready to take on more responsibilities. Based on their skills certain complex tasks such as repairing should also be assigned to them.
Elderly may also be assigned task that would not consume a lot of their energy. Those tasks which could be assigned to them could be similar to what we are assigning the young children.
If we create such family rituals then the daily chores would not be stressful or only limited to the women. This way each and every person gets involved in the daily tasks and becomes more independent and helpful. Nobody would get stressed and the work gets distributed evenly.
Not only the work distribution but this would help the family to spend more quality time together. This will help the family to connect better with each other. When the daily tasks meet with the praise from the family members deeper connections would be formed. Small changes in our daily life can been bring big differences in improving the family bond. Hence in my opinion converting the daily chores into family rituals is a powerful mean to build the family connections.
When dividing housework, should families
