After completion of my education I had been applying for several jobs at various companies. One of the questions that I was asked surprised me completely, "how comfortable are you working in a team?"
In my opinion this question was assessing whether I could be a team player. I told the interviewer was that in my college I had worked on a lot of group projects and hence I know well that how to contribute when it comes to working in team. The interviewer asked a follow up question, "that is not what we mean. Working in group project in college is different. I want to know if you have worked in a professional team before".
The interviewer was aware that I was a fresher. I had been applying for a position where freshers were needed. The job description specifically had mentioned that the candidates should have no industry experience. Despite that I could not understand why this question was put forward to me. Yet I decided to add some more details towards this question, "during my internship I had work with a company. For an entire month I had worked with a team. There I had contributed to the work".
My answer still did not satisfy the interviewer, "the internship is fine. I would not consider that to be your experience with working in a team. During the internship the interns do whatever that had been told to them. I want to know about your experience working with a team in a professional setting. We want a team player and we want to ensure that we are recruiting a right candidate".
I provided and example of my teamwork with an NGO where I was a volunteer collaborating with a team. But the interview still did not take that as an answer, "volunteering is not considered as a professional experience. What is your professional experience working as a team player that is what I want to know".
This is where I realised that I should bring attention to the specific requirement from the job description, "the job description specifies that industry experience is not required for this position. I do not have industry experience. Hence I do not have an experience of working with teams in a professional setting. Yet I had provided you instances to prove that I can work with teams. My group projects and internships provide the details of how efficiently I had work in teams".
When I spoke about the job description I saw that interviewer got offended, "I am very well aware of the position for which I am hiring. I was looking for a someone with the experience of working with teams. It looks like you are not the right candidate".
The interview ended. When I was asked about the feedback of the interview I mentioned that the interviewer's expectations were not in alignment with the job description.
This was just one of the examples where it shows that often interviewer's expectations are different from the profile provided. After all the decision is made based on the interviewer's assessment. These scenarios often occur in the industry. It does not reduce our importance or eligibility but it shows that often there is misalignment with the profile and expectations.
When an interviewer asks about your team experience, do you
Your vote is final.
