The library beneath the moon

Nobody in the village of Eldermere had ever seen the moon turn blue.Yet, on the night of Mira’s eighteenth birthday, it happened.
She was standing beside her bedroom window when the ordinary silver moon slowly changed colour. First, it became pale violet. Then deep
blue, glowing so brightly that the entire forest beyond her house appeared almost painted.Mira pressed her hand against the glass.
That was when she heard the whisper.“Come to the forest.”She froze. The voice had not come from outside. It had come from inside her room.
She turned around, but there was nobody there.Again, the voice whispered.“Bring the key.”Mira looked at the old wooden box beneath her bed.
She had found it years ago in her grandmother’s attic. It had never opened, no matter how many times she tried. But tonight, something about it felt different.
She pulled it out.The box clicked.A tiny golden key appeared inside.Mira stared at it.She had never seen it before.
Without telling anyone, she slipped out of the house and walked toward the forest. The trees seemed different beneath the blue moon. Their branches moved even though there was no wind. Tiny golden lights floated between them like fireflies. After walking for nearly half an hour, Mira reached a clearing.
There stood an enormous stone door. There was no wall around it.Just a door standing alone in the middle of the forest. At its centre was a golden keyhole.
Mira slowly inserted the key.The door opened.Behind it was not another part of the forest. It was a library.A gigantic library.
Thousands of shelves stretched higher than she could see. Books floated through the air, opening and closing by themselves. Blue candles burned without melting, and a staircase spiralled endlessly upward.
A small creature wearing round spectacles hurried toward her.“You’re late,” it said.Mira blinked.“You can talk?”
The creature looked offended.“Of course I can talk. The more important question is: can you read?”“Read what?”
The creature pointed toward the centre of the library.A single book floated there. Its cover was completely black.Mira walked closer.
Her name was written across it in golden letters. She touched the cover. The library suddenly went silent.Every candle went out.The creature whispered, “Oh no.”
The book opened by itself. On the first page was a drawing of Mira standing exactly where she was.But beneath the drawing was something that made her blood run cold.
A date.Tomorrow’s date. And beneath it were five words:The kingdom will fall tomorrow.Mira looked up.The creature had disappeared.
Then, somewhere deep inside the library, a bell began to ring.Once.Twice.Three times. And from the darkness between the bookshelves came the sound of footsteps.
Someone—or something—was walking toward her.Mira grabbed the mysterious book. The footsteps stopped.A voice emerged from the darkness.“Finally, the Moon Reader has returned.”
Mira stared into the shadows.“I’ve never been here before.”The voice laughed softly.“Yes,” it replied.“But you have.”
The candles suddenly burst back into blue flames. And Mira saw a thousand portraits hanging on the walls.Every portrait was of her.Every one was painted centuries ago.
The night of your eighteenth birthday, the moon turned blue and a voice whispered, 'Come to the forest.' You found a key and a mysterious book. Do you
